Pay Range: $22.41 – $29.11/hour, based on experience.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Maintenance Technician
Department: Public Works
Pay Grade: $22.41 – $29.11 (commensurate with experience)
Reports To: Public Works Director
FLSA Status: Hourly; Non-Exempt
Supervises: None.
Position Summary
The Village of St. Joseph is seeking a dependable and hardworking Maintenance Technician to join our Public Works Department. This position plays a vital role in maintaining and improving the Village’s infrastructure and public spaces. Under the direction of the Public Works Director, the Maintenance Technician supports operations related to streets, stormwater systems, parks, forestry, public buildings, and snow removal.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operate and maintain a variety of heavy equipment, including trucks, snowplows, backhoes, skid steers, tractors, and mowers
- Perform general maintenance and repair of stormwater infrastructure, streets, sidewalks, park facilities, and Village buildings
- Carry out seasonal responsibilities such as mowing, leaf pickup, brush removal, and tree trimming
- Perform snow and ice control operations, including plowing, salting, and manual snow removal
- Conduct basic facility repairs including plumbing, carpentry, concrete, and light electrical work
- Maintain accurate records, including daily work logs and maintenance tracking, using spreadsheets and other software
- Use email and mobile or desktop devices to communicate and manage tasks
- Follow safety protocols and Village procedures
- Interact professionally and courteously with residents, coworkers, and contractors
- Respond to emergency or after-hours situations as part of an on-call rotation
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid Illinois driver’s license
- Ability to obtain a CDL (Class B with air brake endorsement) within 6 months of hire (training assistance available)
- Demonstrated ability to operate heavy equipment safely and effectively
- Basic computer proficiency, including the ability to use email, spreadsheets, and simple digital recordkeeping tools
- Mechanical aptitude and understanding of general maintenance practices
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Strong customer service, communication skills, and a positive, team-oriented attitude
- Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed for emergencies or weather events
Preferred Qualifications:
- Residency is not required for this position, although residing within a reasonable distance of the Village is required.
- Prior public works or municipal maintenance experience, or similar construction experience and work in the street right-of-way.
- Familiarity with stormwater systems, and public facility maintenance
- Experience using GPS, mapping tools, or maintenance management software
Physical & Environmental Demands:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and perform manual tasks.
- Exposure to noise, dust, traffic, and construction environments.
Salary
$22.41 - $29.11 per hour
