​Entry-Level Nuclear & Radiological Engineer


​Starfire is seeking a highly motivated persons to join our technical engineering team to support R&D activities and product development with long-term partners in the medical, defense, security and environmental areas using neutrons, x-rays and gamma-rays.  We seek candidates for two separate roles: (1) detection hardware setup, particle accelerator testing, and data analysis, and (2) modeling setup, radiation simulation, collimation setup & testing, and data analysis.

We seek a person familiar with ionizing radiation interaction with matter from a hardware, modeling software, and data analysis perspective.  Building on your base nuclear radiation skill set, modeling experience and/or detection electronics aptitude, we will provide job-specific training unique to using our products and technologies for spectroscopy, imaging and dosing applications.  You will enjoy “hands-on” work alongside the scientific team supporting on a diverse set of applications.

This position is eligible to earn an “on-the-job” Masters of Engineering (M.Eng.) Degree through a professional program between Starfire and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Plasma Engineering or Electrical Engineering.  If eligible and meeting requirements, Starfire will reimburse tuition costs for the M.Eng. while working 75% full time over a two-year period. The M.Eng. capstone project will be directly relevant to work at Starfire.  There is potential for a thesis-based Masters in Nuclear, Plasma and Radiological Engineering if certain requirements are met; inquire within.
Job Summary:
​The position is responsible designing, fabricating, integrating, and testing detection & data acquisition hardware and custom radiation collimation & shielding solutions for nGen® and Centurion® particle accelerators.  The position involves working closely with radiation safety, setting up radiation shielding, operating systems under representative environments, conducting field campaigns, and performing simulations and data analysis for both production and R&D, and presenting to internal and external customers.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Contribute as part of the particle accelerator production team with integration, assembly, testing and validation of hardware with relevant detectors and imaging media.
  • Apply nuclear engineering experience for text fixture design and experimental setup. 
  • Perform MCNPX/GEANT4 modeling and simulations for radiation interactions to support end-user requirements.
  • Assist systems and R&D engineers meeting milestones and deliverables for customers. 
  • Communicate consistently and openly with engineers, technicians, and managers. 
  • Actively pursue effective collaboration with other team members.
Required Qualifications: 
  • Relevant Baccalaureate degree with relevant experience: 
    • e.g., Nuclear, Plasma and Radiological or Electrical Engineering 
  • Strong desire to learn and appreciates hands-on work.
  • Experience in one or more of the following: 
    • MCNPX or GEANT4 code for radiation transport simulations
    • Scintillators, conventional or silicon photomultipliers, CMOS flat panel detectors, signal processing, multichannel acquisition 
  • Able to lift 50lbs. and perform physical tasks in various positions: standing, reaching, crouching, kneeling, etc.
  • Desire to learn, appreciates hands-on work, strong mechanical aptitude, and experience with electronics and computer modeling.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills fluent in English (written and verbal)
  • Proficient with MS Office Software & Teams Flexible and willing to work with multiple functional groups within the company

Desired Qualifications:  
  • Experience with gamma-ray spectroscopy, element identification
  • Fluency with script languages, large data set manipulation, AI/ML concepts
  • High-speed electronics, pulse wavelet analysis, signal processing experience
  • Interpret mechanical drawings and electrical schematics with ease. 
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently. 
  • Minimum 3+ years’ work experiences
