Overview
Responsibilities
Rooming patients — Collect pertinent information including chief complaint, family history, social history, surgical history, and perform medication reconciliation upon patient arrival.
Telephone interactions — Complete directed phone communications with patients, families, pharmacies, and other health facilities; gather and maintain patient information per department policies.
Administrative tasks — Perform check‑in/check‑out, prior authorizations, appointment scheduling, benefit verification, and coordination of referrals and testing.
Office procedures — Carry out procedures per department competencies, such as urine catheterization, bladder scanning, suture/staple removal, cast application/removal, reading negative TB tests, and directing positive‑appearing TB screens to nursing staff.
Patient instructions — Provide written instructions for procedures, medications, and follow‑up per provider direction.
Condition‑specific education — Retrieve and provide educational materials from approved internet sources, internal sites, or printed materials as directed by the provider.
Medication administration — Administer medications per provider order; mix, administer, and document inoculation injections.
Prescription support — Assist with medication refills per protocol, call medications into pharmacies, notify patients of refills, and document actions in the EMR.
Competency maintenance — Maintain required competencies for point‑of‑care testing, equipment handling, and specialty training.
Patient flow support — Room patients and assist with flow (height, weight, vitals, medication review, allergy review, pharmacy verification).
Urine drug screens — Perform urine drug screening as required.
Supply management — Order and stock linens and patient refreshments.
Instrument sterilization — Clean and sterilize instruments; operate the autoclave.
TENS unit teaching — Provide patient instruction on TENS unit use.
Quality control testing — Perform daily QC on glucose monitors and Tru‑Temp; complete monthly QC for urine pregnancy tests and drug screens.
Exam room preparation — Open and close exam rooms according to department standards.
Qualifications
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) — American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – AMT — American Medical Technologists (AMT)
Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) — National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)
Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) — National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
Basic Life Support (BLS) — American Heart Association (AHA), required within 30 days
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – ARMA — American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA)
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – AAH — American Allied Health (AAH)
Certified Medical Assistant (NCCT) — National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
H.S. Diploma/GED
