Overview
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) / Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) provides compassionate, patient‑centered support in an OB/GYN practice by performing essential clinical and administrative duties. This role helps ensure seamless patient flow, assists providers during exams and procedures, and contributes to a welcoming, efficient, and supportive environment for patients throughout all stages of their reproductive and gynecologic care.
Responsibilities
Rooming patients and collecting information on chief complaint, family history, social history, surgical history, and medication reconciliation
Completing telephone communications with patients, families, pharmacies, and other healthcare facilities as directed
Gathering and maintaining patient information via telephone per department processes and policies
Performing administrative tasks such as patient check‑in/check‑out, scheduling appointments, and coordinating referrals and testing
Carrying out office procedures per department competencies
Performing procedures such as bladder scanning, suture or staple removal, or directing patients to nursing staff
Providing written instructions regarding procedures, medications, or follow‑up per provider direction
Retrieving and providing condition‑specific patient education from approved sources per provider orders
Administering medications under provider orders
Assisting with prescription medication refills per department protocols
Calling medications into pharmacies, notifying patients of refills, and documenting actions in the EMR
Maintaining competencies in point‑of‑care testing, equipment handling, and specialty training
Performing all duties of MA staff
Completing RX refills and normal lab results from the nurse work list
Obtaining detailed patient medical histories at prenatal intake appointments
Administering vaccines and medications under ordering providers
Compounding or diluting medications with demonstrated competency
Excelling in customer service, team building, and problem‑solving
Assisting with intra‑office procedures such as IUD insertion and removal, biopsies, and colposcopies
Qualifications
Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association (AHA)
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Allied Health (AAH)
Certified Medical Assistant (NCCT) – National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Medical Technologists (AMT)
Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) – National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)
Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) – National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA)
