Overview
The Certified Medical Assistant / Registered Medical Assistant plays an essential role in delivering seamless, high‑quality patient care. This position supports providers by performing both clinical and administrative duties that enhance the examination and treatment experience. With a focus on efficiency, compassion, and accuracy, the CMA/RMA helps ensure smooth daily operations while contributing to a positive, well‑coordinated patient flow throughout the practice.
Responsibilities
- Rooming patients and collecting pertinent information (chief complaint, family, social, surgical history, medication reconciliation)
- Taking vital signs and reviewing medications/allergies
- Completing telephone communications with patients, families, pharmacies, and other healthcare facilities
- Gathering and maintaining patient information via telephone per department processes
- Performing administrative tasks: patient check‑in/out, prior authorizations, scheduling, benefits verification, referrals, and testing coordination
- Assisting with office procedures per department competencies
- Performing procedures such as urine catheterizations, bladder scanning, suture/staple removal, cast application/removal, and other point‑of‑care diagnostic testing
- Reading negative TB skin test results or directing patients to nursing staff when results appear positive
- Providing written instructions regarding procedures, medications, or follow‑up per provider direction
- Retrieving and providing condition‑specific education from approved sources per provider orders
- Administering medications per provider order
- Assisting with prescription refills per department protocols
- Calling medications into pharmacies, notifying patients of refills, and documenting actions in the EMR
- Maintaining competencies related to point‑of‑care testing, equipment handling, and specialty training
- Assisting providers with minor procedures
- Managing in‑basket tasks: work/school/PE notes, handicap placards, prior authorizations
- Stocking and closing down rooms
- Removing splints/casts, applying dressings, removing staples and sutures
- Fitting DME
- Completing MRI screening
- Collecting and processing specimens accurately
Qualifications
- Certified Medical Assistant (NCCT) – National Center for Competency Testing
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – American Association of Medical Assistants
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Medical Technologists (AMT)
- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) – National Healthcareer Association
- Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) – National Association for Health Professionals
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association (required within 30 days)
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA)
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Allied Health (AAH)
- Education: High School Diploma or GED
