TITLE: Interim Secondary Multilingual Coordinator

LOCATION: Urbana High School

SUPERVISOR: This position reports to the Directors of Bilingual Programs & Building Administrators

JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Directors of Multilingual Programs, the Secondary Multilingual Program Coordinator (UHS or UMS) assists the program by providing leadership, guidance, and support for the multilingual program at their assigned school. Coordinators will lead by implementing and monitoring the effectiveness of the secondary multilingual programs at the designated school and work. They will also work in conjunction with the Tier One Curriculum Implementation teachers to support the effective implementation of the USD 116 core curriculum, instructional framework, and assessment systems as necessary to improve student achievement and build teacher capacity around the core Language Arts (English, Spanish, French) and Math curriculum. The Secondary Multilingual Coordinator will also work with students in an assigned class, small intervention groups, or through co-taught lessons as needed based on data.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

  • Assist with coordinating the assessment framework for Bilingual and ESL Programs from 6-12. Coordinates screening and assessment of all new emergent bilingual students with the WIDA Screener, ACCESS, IAR, and other assessments as necessary at 6-12.
  • Assist with analyzing assessment data and provide suggestions for instructional modifications and interventions that enhance student learning and improve test performance.
  • Provide guidance to staff in working with linguistically and culturally diverse children and families, specifically in the areas of support and involvement of the home language, integration of culture in the school setting, cross-cultural issues/issues of language and culture, the acquisition of English as a second language (ESL), communication with parents and parent involvement, culturally appropriate assessment.
  • Leads general classroom teachers, Tier One Intensive Teachers, and grade-level teams in identifying teaching and learning needs based on student data.
  • Leads teachers on best practices in culturally and linguistically responsive teaching, student engagement, data-based decision-making, and implementing district-adopted curriculums at all grade levels, in all disciplines, and for ML students.
  • Maintain confidentiality and the privacy of individual teachers, students, and families
  • Champion, promote, and increase racial equity, social justice, diversity, multiculturalism practices, and awareness for all staff and students.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of adult learning in order to meet the individual needs of teachers, including their varied learning styles, knowledge, skills, experiences, cultures, and backgrounds.
  • Model, lead, and participate in the courageous conversations necessary to support the co-teaching model and processes to analyze student data.
  • Provide constructive feedback to foster co-teaching skills and build capacity for Tier One Intensive and general classroom teachers. ***ESL co-teaching is the current model used in math and ELA for ESL support
  • Meets and instructs classes, small groups, or individual students as needed. Uses a wide range of instructional strategies and technologies to meet and enhance the needs of a diverse student population (The ML Coordinator will teach no more than two class periods per day)
  • Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request.
  • Co-teaching classes as determined from ESL and new curriculum implementation lens
  • Analyze student data from both formative and summative assessments to drive differentiated instruction and data-based decision-making for students.
  • Provide staff development on effective instructional strategies and data-based decision-making to teaching teams, as well as small and large faculty groups.
  • Participate as part of the school’s leadership team for continuous school improvement, and attend school improvement meetings as scheduled by the building principal.
  • Attend the district’s professional development sessions as applicable to the position (summer, after school, etc.)
  • Collaborate on professional development initiatives with staff development providers.
  • Act as a school and community advocate for linguistically and culturally diverse children and families.
  • Work with school staff in the selection of bilingual and multicultural materials.
  • Coordinate home language, culture, and English as a second language services for linguistically and culturally diverse children and families.
  • Serve as a member of the Student Services Team at UMS/UHS to ensure a supportive environment for emergent bilingual students and staff.
  • Coordinate the management of cumulative folder paperwork, documentation, waivers, etc.
  • Work in collaboration with the Directors of Multilingual Program and the Director of K-12 Curriculum to keep current with the 6-12 departments and courses of study, the district's scope and sequence framework, and state standards/guidelines.
  • Promote the continuity of the instructional program of the district and the bilingual language needs of the students.
  • Utilize the ELLevation data software system to manage program implementation and development
  • Maintain and update student information spreadsheets.
  • Assist in the B-PAC and Dual Language Advisory Committees.
  • Additional duties as assigned by supervisors.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's Degree, from an accredited college or university, with certification and endorsements.
  • Minimum of 2 years of successful teaching experience
  • Experience in professional development, responsive teaching, and facilitating adult learners
  • Experience and knowledge in the relation to instruction and instructional processes and in facilitating the delivery of effective instruction.
  • Coursework in Latina/o Studies, Chicana/o Studies, African American Studies or Ethnic Studies preferred.

LICENSES/CREDENTIALS: Valid Illinois Teaching License with the appropriate

endorsements. (Bilingual/ESL endorsements required)

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Salary and Benefit information can be found on the Human Resources webpage. There are many opportunities for employees to earn additional compensation (stipends, differentials, extra duty pay, etc.) during the regular school year and in the summer.
  • This is a position within the collective bargaining unit and is not an administrative position.
  • This is an exempt position.
  • Student Contact Days and other days stipulated on the work calendar in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Interim position for School Year 2026-2027
