University Housing provides an essential element of the Illinois experience, with hundreds of employees across seven units working together to build and maintain safe, healthy and welcoming homes for our residents. With 26 residence halls, three apartment complexes, nine dining locations, multiple storage facilities, miles of sidewalk, a quad and so much more to care for - our Facilities team has its hands full. University Housing Facilities include maintenance, facility planning, engineering, interior design and building service.

Job Summary

Perform custodial work required for the routine cleaning and upkeep of buildings. All University Housing staff will foster a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative work environment within University Housing.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Cleans and services lavatories and restrooms.
  • Mops, sweeps, and scrubs floors and other surfaces.
  • Operates automatic scrubbers and power sweepers, including rider type, used in connection with building cleaning and provides operator type maintenance.
  • Collects and places debris and recyclable material removed from buildings in containers for removal.
  • Cleans and dusts furniture, tables, exhibit cases, fixtures, windows, doors, trim, and related furnishings.
  • Provides services for maintenance of carpet floor coverings.
  • Washes and/or cleans window and door glass, washes interior glass, including partitions, framed pictures, and doors.
  • Moves furniture, supplies, and miscellaneous equipment as directed.
  • Cleans, renovates, and renews floor surface finishes.
  • Changes light bulbs and cleans light fixtures, as required.
  • Cleans and polishes furniture.
  • Sweeps or shovels snow from steps and walks at building entrances and connecting walks.
  • Locks and unlocks doors to buildings, classrooms, lecture rooms, or offices. Reports items that need repair.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Position involves performing general physical activities that require considerable use of hands, arms, legs, and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, stooping, handling, positioning, moving materials, and manipulating items. Position involves exerting muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects. Position involves frequent bending, remaining in a stationary position, moving throughout the assigned work area as well as moving and operating floor cleaning equipment.

On occasion, specific assignments that come open for bidding may require more heavy or frequent lifting and moving of items, such as those that include set-ups of tables and chairs.

Position involves performing work in all temperatures under a variety of conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

A small number of BSW job assignments in University Housing require a valid driver’s license. When hiring groups of individuals at a time, this could be taken into consideration if needed when matching candidates up to open assignments.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of cleaning solutions and custodial methods.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow instructions including reading written directions, labeling, and measurements.
  • Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4502 - Building Service Worker position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search.

The wage for this position is $20.30 an hour. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints.

Work Schedule

The work schedule for this position varies as we are hiring for multiple vacancies. Daytime and evening shifts including weekends, ranging from 7am-3:30pm, 8am-4:30pm, 4pm-12am, or 5pm-1am.This position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University’s Workplace Flexibility policy.
