The Department of Psychology at the University of Illinois seeks applicants for the position of Academic Advisor to advise, guide, and provide resources, direction, and support for undergraduate students in the Department of Psychology regarding course choices, progress toward graduation, and other academic, and career issues regarding the undergraduate experience.

Duties & Responsibilities

Direct Advising

  • Direct advising of students, both declared psychology majors and potential majors. Work with the college and campus administrative units responsible for direct services to students.
  • Utilize DARS, Banner, and UGradRecs to create and maintain files for all undergraduate students in order to record and track students' progress toward a degree and to determine when students need additional academic assistance in order to design individual support plans for students.
  • Organize and conduct meetings for potential Psychology majors.
  • Provide advising and assistance to incoming freshmen and transfer students during summer orientation/registration in person, via telephone, and via virtual online advising in coordination with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Planning

  • Work with the Psychology advising office and other Psychology staff as needed to plan and carry out the Psychology Department's Spring Convocation Ceremony
  • Coordinate guest speakers for various seminars to be presented to undergraduates.

Group Advising through non-credit course

  • Create and lead new student orientation classes


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Psychology or related field.
  • Professional experience working with college students in academic affairs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree, preferably in Psychology or related field. Experience in advising, counseling, or academic progress monitoring
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to working in an inclusive environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, particularly those that enable the candidate to effectively communicate clearly with a wide range of constituencies including, students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni and partners
  • Excellent organizational and assessment skills
  • Working knowledge of undergraduate academic program policy and procedures
  • Ability to work with computer database applications
  • Demonstrated ability to work from a strengths-based advising perspective


Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. The budgeted salary range for the position is $53,000 to $58,000. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position. Hybrid work options may be available for this position, with the ability to be on-site at the University of Illinois Urbana- Champaign campus as needed per the University’s Workplace Flexibility policy-https://cam.illinois.edu/policies/hr-87-2/
