Job Summary
The Electrician Foreperson executes duties associated with administration and operation of the shop. Plans, schedules, coordinates, and supervises the work of assigned electricians.Duties & Responsibilities
- Inspect and approve the work of Electricains.
- Coordinate with other Utilities personnel when additional personnel are needed for emergency or/and routine work.
- Schedule work.
- Observe employee's habits and enforce safety rules.
- Supervise and evaluate the Electrician Apprentices.
- Provide technical advice for the Electricians.
- Gather information for and discuss personnel problems with the Steam & Power Plant V.
- Counsel employees in regard to performance or workplace behavior issues.
- Work with Director of Utilities, Steam & Power Plant V, or Human Resource to personnel concerning disciplinary actions.
- Expedite personnels and materials to work locations.
- Arrange special outages for equipment repairs to prevent interruption of services.
- Assist with preparation of estimates for repairs and departmental jobs.
- Perform the necessary public relations with campus customers, peers and employees.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands
Minimum Qualifications
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Experience sufficient to qualify as a journeyman Electrician, with a minimum of nine (9) years (108 months) of actual work in the trade, including apprenticeship or vocational training. The trade for this purpose shall include work normally performed by Electricians i.e. installing, maintaining, and/or repairing electrical systems, generators, transformers, motors, and other electrical/electronic controls, electrical switchboard and other apparatus utilizing electricity, electrical, electronic and direct digital control systems, fire and alarm systems, and associated electrical, electronic and fiber optic equipment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to supervise and instruct.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of the National Electrical Code and University Building Standards.
- Electrical knowledge to recognize unsafe or faulty conditions in construction, utilization, and distribution of electricity.
- Extensive experience reading, interpreting, and working from electrical drawings, sketches, wiring diagrams and blueprints.
- Professional skills to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical equipment of various types.
- Ability to perform all tasks associated with skilled journeymen electricians.
- Ability to give and follow directions.
- Knowledge of safety procedures.
- Understanding of Utilities mission and values
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
A. Complexity
Employee may become deeply involved in the troubleshooting of all plant equipment and interrelationship between Power Plant and campus systems. Must deal with a variety of maintenance issues and the utilities personnel affected by the problems. Must possess adequate “people skills” to maintain a professional relationship with the employees and utilities personnel that you serve under any conditions. Must be able to lead by example.
Advances in electronic components and installation of other components brings increased responsibility to keep abreast of operating procedures, maintenance and troubleshooting to the Power Plant as well as campus systems.
B. Scope and Effect
Functions addressed by the Electricians often have extreme effects on utility production
and distribution, helping to maintain their part of the University mission.
PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Multiple daily contact with all maintenance people and most operating personnel.
Occasional contact by phone and in person with F&S shops, wholesalers in community and
factory representatives of equipment used and service representatives.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
A. Physical Requirements
- General good health.
- Includes work on five levels of the Power Plant. Must be able to climb stairs, lift of
equipment, work in close quarters, move rapidly in some situations; stamina and
perseverance are required. - Must be able to walk, climb, bend, and crawl in order to gain access to or perform the
work of an electrician in areas such as attics, crawl spaces, false floors, ceilings, poles,
and scaffolding. - Must be able to lift related equipment overhead and hold it for prolonged periods of
time due to the overhead placement of construction materials such as conduit and
fixtures. - Must be able to lift related equipment and material; such as large panels and motors.
- Able to move rapidly in emergency situations.
- Physical stamina and strength required.
- Respirators may be required while performing the duties described.
- Mental stress is a factor in this job.
B. Work Environment
- Must be able to work in temperature extremes, ranging from freezing weather to steam
tunnels. - Must be able to work at heights
- Must be able work amid the potential hazards of a Power Plant and construction sites;
such as high voltage electricity, dust, high noise levels, chemicals, and products of
combustion. - Certain hazards may be present in the form of radiation, asbestos, insulation,
chemicals, high temperatures, high noise levels, severe weather, dust, etc. - Outside work is required in all seasons.
- Required to work occasionally in confined spaces.
- Some jobs require an employee to work in an environment that involves exposure to
unpleasant and noxious fumes and odors.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 1264 - Electrician Foreman position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 6/8/2026. The hourly rate for this position is $58.73/hr .
