The Program in Jewish Culture and Society at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign invites applications for an Instructor/Lecturer position to teach Hebrew and develop the Hebrew program. Additional ability to teach Hebrew literature, Israeli culture, Yiddish, or other relevant courses in Jewish Studies is preferred.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a Master’s degree (Instructor) or a Ph.D. (Lecturer) in Hebrew language, Hebrew literature, Second Language Acquisition, or related field. Candidates must be able to offer proficiency-based language instruction and demonstrate professional level proficiency in Hebrew and English.

Preference will be given to candidates who have advanced graduate work in Hebrew and/or a closely related field, have a record of effective language teaching at the college level, or have a demonstrated record of teaching and curricular/program development in a non-college setting.

Preference will be given to candidates who show evidence of teaching effectiveness as well as the ability to design an effective, proficiency-based two-year language sequence and to train/supervise instructors with little or no previous teaching experience.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time non-tenure track position, appointed on a 9-month basis. The budgeted salary for the position is $60,000. Teaching load for Instructor/Lecturer is 3:3. The expected start date is August 16, 2026. This position is eligible for sponsorship for work authorization, except for sponsorship of a new H1B petition that would incur the $100,000 fee. This position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University’s Workplace Flexibility policy.
