Job Summary
To replace lamps, clean light fixtures, maintain lamp records, recycle lamps and ballasts, and interact with a variety of stakeholders such as other F&S team members, campus customers, supervision, and peers.Duties & Responsibilities
- 1. Check and replace all defective lamps in all interior spaces and exterior wall pack fixtures for the buildings throughout campus. Clean, repair, or replace broken or damaged light fixture diffusers and lenses. Have a working knowledge of lamp technology and compliance with Campus Energy Conversation Program.
- 2. Report any electrical repairs needed, maintain inventory, and follow proper procedures for discarding waste lamps in accordance with EPA/University guidelines.
- 3. Assists in setting up, using and taking down scaffolds, ladders, and lifts. Assists and trains new employees.
- 4. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Must be able to walk, climb, bend, and crawl in order to access any work area such as attics, crawl spaces, false floors, ceilings, and scaffolds. Must be able to work at heights on lifts, scaffolds, ladders of all types, and bucket truck for lengths of time. Must be agile and able to work safely in traffic areas on laddersMinimum Qualifications
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Current/valid State of Illinois driver’s license for the type(s) of vehicle(s) to be operated.
3. Possession of a valid State of Illinois driver's license at the time of hire and maintained throughout employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- 1. A working knowledge of basic electrical skills and lamp technology including LED, high intensity discharge, fluorescent, and incandescent.
- 2. A working knowledge of hand tools and the basic mechanical skills to remove and replace/repair all kinds of lamps, light fixture lenses and diffusers.
- 3. Ability to work in a self-managed environment with limited supervision.
- 4. A working knowledge of safety procedures.
- 5. Ability to constructively interact and collaborate in a positive manner with co-workers and the campus community.
- 6. Ability to follow and give direction.
- 7. A working knowledge of proper waste lamp disposal and Campus Energy Conservation Program.
- 8. Ability to adhere to F&S safety and health policies.
- 9. Ability to to work amid hazards of work sites such as exposure to chemicals, heat, cold, dust, fumes, noise, animals, in climate weather, steam tunnels, laboratories, coal fired power plant, and mechanical rooms.
- 10. Ability to maintain a good working relationship with supervision, peers, employees, customers, and the campus community. Mutual dignity and respect being the key to good working relationships.
- 10. Ability to receive daily instructions from Supervisor of Building Craftspersons, Foreperson, as well as Associate Director Operations, Maintenance, and Alterations.
- 11. Ability to follow instructions given by trainers and supervision in order to successfully complete training requirements.
- 12. Ability to support the Mission, Vision, Values, Guiding Principles and management operational directions and philosophies of Facilities and Services by exemplifying high standards of leadership, loyalty, craftsmanship, and dedication.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 2240 - Laborer-Electrician position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 5/18/2026. Starting salary is $22.53/hour.
