The Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering at The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for a Visiting Research Engineer for the Intelligent Manufacturing and Thermal Systems Laboratory. This position will build, design, and test electromechanical systems hardware and computer vision software to analyze and measure manufacturing processes and systems.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design software architecture based on deep machine learning and artificial intelligence to interpret vision data from manufacturing processes and systems.
  • Design robotic systems that capture vision information from manufacturing machines and manufactured components.
  • Build and test computer vision deep machine learning workflows to scale technology.
  • Prepare presentations and write reports and publications.
  • Travel to attend meetings with sponsors and partners, to learn about emerging technologies.
  • Design, test, and implement software quality control systems for manufacturing computer vision. Assume appropriate related duties to further the mission of the department.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Experience with deep machine learning applied to computer vision and manufacturing systems
  • Experience with electromechanical systems design and operation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with robotic system design and operation
  • Experience publishing in manufacturing journals or technical conferences
  • Experience working in the manufacturing industry

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with individuals from a wide range of cultural backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Knowledge of Artificial Intelligence, manufacturing processes, systems, and machines and robotic systems.
  • Knowledge of software design, testing and implementation.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

This is a full-time academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The position may become permanent at a later date. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. The budgeted salary range for this position is $90,000-$100,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. This position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University’s Workplace Flexibility policy This position is not eligible for any type of sponsorship for work authorization.
