Job Summary

Responsible for the development, implementation, and supervision of our cleaning program for the campus. Provide leadership for building service workers engaged in custodial services and maintenance of assigned University facilities.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manages the work of approximately 25 – 45 Building Service Workers assigned to perform custodial services and maintenance of assigned University facilities. Responsible for training and supervising staff including approving time reports and sick/vacation leaves, completing performance evaluations, updating the custodial job assignment work sheets, and all related matters. Monitors operational needs and takes appropriate action to ensure adequate staffing coverage at all times, which includes the management of necessary overtime.
  • Responsible for making personal contacts with customers daily to develop and maintain effective relationships
  • Inspects assigned facilities and determine that the work assigned is being accomplished by the assigned custodian and the maintaining of the cleaning standard level, notes improvement necessary, and communicates same with custodial workers/staff accordingly.
  • Develops, administers, and supervises the establishment of appropriate customized cleaning standards for assigned facilities
  • Reviews and approves work supplies and equipment orders for custodial supply/equipment orders including its procurement
  • Responsible for custodial equipment / key inventory control, maintains the inventory of building custodial supply for assigned facilities, Procures new keys as necessary.
  • Conducts weekly custodial staff team meetings
  • Maintains records, such as those related to work assignments, personnel, and staffing.
  • Assists in the development of new initiatives.
  • Assists designated supervisor with administrative responsibilities as needed, including acting on supervisor’s behalf during absences, serving as a representative at meetings, and assisting in maintaining relationships with union representatives. Proactively and responsibly communicates with designated supervisor on matters as appropriate.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Additional Physical Demands

    1. This is both a sedentary and mobile position. The incumbent must check various campus buildings, and the work performance of Building Service Supervisors, Building Service Foreperson and Building Service Workers.
    2. Seasonal weather extremes are faced on occasion. Exposure to sun, wind, cold, heat, dampness, snow and ice can be expected on these occasions.
    3. Work in other than regular hours is required on limited occasions and the individual must be able to vary work hours as the operating needs of the University demand. Individual will be required to work on varying shifts that may be subject to change based on operating needs.

    Minimum Qualifications

    1. High school graduation or equivalent.
    2. Three (3) years (36 months) of experience in building service operations or related work.
    3. Two (2) years (24 months) in building custodial supervisory capacity.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Strong knowledge of MS Excel, Word and other applications used by Building Services
    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and ability to convey instructions and provide direction
    • Strong computer skills are required for the use of spreadsheets, email, and other documents. Excel and Microsoft Word are preferred
    • Knowledge of custodial training procedures
    • Thorough understanding of University, F&S and Building Services policies
    • Skill in working with people and providing excellent customer service
    • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions including maintaining appropriate records as required
    • Support the Mission, Vision, Values and Guiding Principles of Facilities & Services.

    Appointment Information

    The Building Service Supervisor is a 100% full-time Civil Service position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The annual salary range for this classification is between $63,000-$65,000 and the unit has three vacant positions.
