The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for the position of Teaching Associate – Physical Education at the University Laboratory High School. There is a possibility of two hires for this position. Uni High is a 5-year public school serving approximately 330 academically motivated students in grades 8–12. This is a 9-month, non-tenure track academic staff position for the 2026–2027 school year, beginning August 2026, contingent upon the successful completion of a fingerprint-based criminal background check. A laboratory mission of innovative curriculum development, outreach to other schools and the community, and/or involvement with professional organizations is part of the overall job responsibilities. The salary range for this position is $52,000 – $72,000.

The Teaching Associate position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois and the Uni Faculty Organization/IEA-NEA union. For more information regarding the contract, please go to:

Job Summary

The Physical Education Teaching Associate will be responsible for teaching four courses in the PE Department and contributing to the fulfillment of the Uni High mission through the completion of an individual Lab Mission.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach assigned courses in Physical Education in areas of fitness, sports, and strength training and demonstrate innovative curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
  • Maintain records of individual student achievement and evaluate students on a daily basis.
  • Support Uni High’s shared vision and goals regarding physical education and physical activity.
  • Complete a laboratory mission of innovative curriculum development, outreach to other schools and the community, and/or involvement with professional organizations.
  • Coach sports if needed.

Position Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • A degree in physical education, kinesiology, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) in Physical Education or related field.
  • Master's degree in Education or related field.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in a school setting.
  • Experience successfully teaching diverse groups of students.
  • Ability and willingness to coach extracurricular sports.
  • Experience creating a learning environment responsive to student needs.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic position. The expected start date is August 16, 2026. The salary range for this position is $52,000 - $72,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements. Work authorization sponsorship is not available for this position.
