The LAS Student Academic Affairs Office (SAAO) supports the academic, personal, and professional development of every student. Through collaborations across academic advising, academic achievement program, career services, first year experience program, honors program, and international programs, we support students, promote inclusive dialogue, recognize diverse experiences, and encourage them to design experiences that enable their success.

The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Student Academic Affairs Office are searching for two Academic Advisors to provide holistic academic advising and coordination of student services in support of the personal, educational, and professional development of undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Each position will focus on a different area of the College, specifically Astronomy and Psychology.

The College of LAS Student Academic Affairs embedded advisor will provide undergraduate advising to the Department of Astronomy. What is the origin of the universe, stars, and planets? How do stars die? How will the universe end? Astronomers study some of the biggest questions known today. Modern astronomy uses many other fields, like physics, computer science, and engineering to create a foundational knowledge. Undergraduate students may major in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Computer Sicence + Astronomy, or Astronomy + Data Science. Students may also double major or minor in Astronomy. The department currently enrolls 240 majors and 40 minors.

The College of LAS Student Academic Affairs embedded advisor will provide undergraduate advising to the Department of Psychology. With majors in Brain and Cognitive Science, Psychology, and a minor in Psychology, the Undergraduate Advising Office serves 2100 majors and 400 minors. Our students utilize the many different aspects of human behavior and pursue fields in Research, UX, Law, Physical and Mental Health, and Business to name a few. Because of the flexibility in our majors, many undergraduate students are double majors, pursue dual degrees, and/or have multiple minors.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serves as the primary Academic Advisor for prospective students and students admitted into departments with identified need including holding posted drop-in and appointment hours. Meet with faculty and department leadership to discuss disciplinary trends and department research focus in order to effectively advise students.
  • Serves as a freshmen registration advisor. Contributes to orientation and onboarding activities for new students
  • Monitors Student Engagement Reports submitted by Faculty Members for students at-risk of experiencing academic difficulties
  • Contributes to Recruitment and Yield activities which may require overnight and weekend work on occasion
  • Assisting with/coordinating convocation ceremonies
  • Provide ad hoc assistance to the SAAO team and other duties as assigned to further the mission of the unit

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree. One year of professional experience or two (2) years of graduate work experience working directly with students in secondary or higher education.

Preferred Qualifications

All degree backgrounds will receive full consideration. Preference will be given to those with degrees in the liberal arts and sciences.
Master's Degree or graduate studies in relevant student affairs fields such as education, social work, among other areas.
At least one year of full-time professional experience in academic advising/ counseling, student coaching, or teaching of life skills.

  • Knowledge of academic skills and student development issues associated with undergraduate student populations, especially those that require enhanced advising and academic skills support.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, Zoom, web and social media, Banner, and degree audit systems
  • Successful candidates will demonstrate a working level of proficiency in the following competencies: Facilitating Student Development, Success, and Outcomes: Ability to work developmentally with students; ability to promote student learning, development, and success by applying varied advising approaches to diverse individual student situations. Communicating for Effective Relationships: Knowledge and application of communication techniques (including listening skills) and relationship building skills to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner. Communicating Complex Concepts: Knowledge and use of summarization and simplification techniques to explain complex concepts in simple, clear language appropriate to the audience. Resourcefulness and Judgment: Ability to apply past experience and analysis of information to arrive at sound and timely conclusions. Planning and Organizing: Ability to mobilize time and other resources to get things done.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline date. The budgeted salary range for this position is $53,000 - $58,000. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including equivalent years in rank, training, and field or discipline; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs. Sponsorship for Work Authorization is not available for this position. Hybrid work options may be available for this position after an initial 6-month on-site training period, with the ability to be on-site at the Champaign-Urbana campus as needed per the University of Illinois Workplace Flexibility Guidelines - https://cam.illinois.edu/policies/hr-87-2/.
