Job Summary

Under general supervision, to perform all necessary work required for the preparation, maintenance and operation of stage lighting, stage grid and rigging; for the operation and maintenance of lighting systems; for the set-up and moving of temporary show equipment brought to Krannert; for the installation and removal of theatrical scenery and house curtains within the fabric stagehouse, and related duties in support of facilities as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities

Stage/Event Equipment

• Perform such technical specialties as the splicing of cables and ropes, the use of stageweights, the maintenance and the correct use of tie lines, and the maintenance and repair of curtains.

• Build, assemble, repair, install and remove stage properties, scenery, stage decks, dance floors, and other theatrical scenic elements.

• Construct, maintain, repair, install and operate stage equipment such as battens/line sets, rope locks, torms/teasers, stage floor/traps, cyc,

Stage lighting/Event Lighting systems

• Cut, install, change and maintain inventories of lighting gelatins.

• Install stage lighting and practicals on battens and booms and connect them to the electrical system.

• Maintain and operate stage lighting.

Rigging

• Perform work as directed by KCPA technical direction staff to maintain the safety, trim and proper theatrical rigging at Krannert Center.

• Take all precautions to ensure safe operation of equipment in the theater grid and other elevated places; be alert to the continuing danger inherent to the catwalks, and grid.

• Ensure Compliance with safety procedures regarding rigging and/or working at height when applicable.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years (24 months) of professional experience working with stage equipment, public address or sound reinforcing systems, and/or lighting for live-theater purposes.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of stagecraft.
  • Knowledge of electricity and electronic theories, sound system operation and maintenance procedures, theatrical lighting system operation and maintenance procedures, and terminology and principles pertinent to electric, electronic, sound, and light equipment.
  • Knowledge of stage scenery, illumination, and properties; familiarity with equipment and materials pertaining thereto.
  • Knowledge of stage rigging procedures.
  • Ability to operate and maintain sound and lighting equipment appropriate to the professional presentation of live-theater productions, addresses, concerts, and similar programs.
  • Ability to work as directed and to follow instructions.
  • Ability to work varying and usual work schedules.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to use your hands in a skillful, coordinated way to grasp and manipulate objects and demonstrate small, precise movements (manual dexterity).
  • Ability to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3298 - Assembly Hall Stagehand position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. The collective bargaining agreement sets a wage of $26.30/hour, $54,704 annually. Work authorization sponsorship is not available for this position.
