The Office of Undergraduate Programs in The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for a Coordinator of Undergraduate Research position. The purpose of this position is to encourage and support undergraduate student research in The Grainger College of Engineering, by working with departments, faculty and students. The Coordinator of Undergraduate Research will help identify funding opportunities, facilitate the sharing of best practices and provide timely and useful information about undergraduate research opportunities to students.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Coordinate the Illinois Scholars Undergraduate Research (ISUR) Program. This includes program planning and implementation, selecting applicants, evaluating the program, soliciting research projects, coordinating and training graduate student mentors and working with the College Office of Research and Corporate relations to attract and retain sponsors. This also includes teaching (when appropriate) or coordinating with an instructor on content development of a related course for ISUR students that orients them to research, guides their development as responsible researchers, and satisfies sponsor deliverables.
- Develop and provide information on undergraduate research opportunities for Illinois engineering students. This includes both regular (weekly) communication of opportunities and the coordination of an annual research fair.
- Coordinate with the College and Office of Research and the Campus Office of Undergraduate Research to provide faculty with resources for developing REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) and UROP (Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program) proposals.
- Develop and conduct student and mentor surveys to provide information and feedback on undergraduate research experiences across the Grainger College of Engineering to inform data driven improvements.
- Represent the Grainger College of Engineering in campus-wide committees and programs related to undergraduate research.
- Other duties as assigned. (Prepare proposals and grant applications for funding undergraduate research).
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- A total of one (1) year (12 months) in education, training and/or work experience in conducting and/or presenting university-level research.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. degree and/or a STEM degree
- Experience coordinating undergraduate research experiences.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to make effective public presentations, including both workshop and classroom settings.
- Demonstrated strength in planning and organization.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
This is a full-time Civil Service Program Coordinator position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. The budgeted salary range for this position is $55,000 - $65,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. Hybrid work options may be available for this position, with the ability to be on-site at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus as needed per the University’s Workplace Flexibility policy. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
