Job Summary

Under general supervision from the Operation & Facilities Director, provides specialized services and converts rooms and laboratory areas for meetings and other special events in scientific research facilities where state-of-the-art research equipment is housed. Such facilities might include guest suites, café, conference rooms, wet laboratories, rooms and laboratories with special fire protection and/or air filtration systems, nuclear magnetic resonance imaging rooms, laser facilities, and/or other specialized research laboratories.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs all necessary work involved in the conversion of facilities and setups for events, banquets, symposia, conventions, seminars and dinners including, but not limited to, placement of tables, chairs, curtains, poster boards, podiums, A/V equipment. This includes removing existing furnishings when necessary and replacing them in a timely manner following the event.
  • Visually inspects laboratories daily. Cleans glass windows and doors in laboratories; empties trash cans in laboratories and support rooms; dusts tops of cubicles and walls at lab entrances; wet mops laboratory floors on monthly basis.
  • Works under the direction of the Occupational Safety Coordinator to: maintain first aid kits throughout building. Orders and stocks supplies. Restocks kits on monthly basis and maintains checklist including date when kits were last checked; inspect fire extinguishers on a monthly basis; inspect eyewash stations located in laboratories and support rooms on a monthly basis.
  • Reviews Operations and Facilities calendar system daily for upcoming events. Reviews email system multiple times daily and respond to messages. Responds to tasks using IGB ticketing system where indicated.
  • Visually inspect glass washrooms daily. Promptly reports in writing any suspected equipment malfunctions (ex. water leaking on floor) or safety concerns to Facilities Manager. Wet mops glass washrooms on weekly basis.
  • Wet mops specific rooms in the Core Facilities following the schedule provided by the Facilities Operations Coordinator
  • Assists in setting up and operating media communications (in coordination with Computer Networking Resource Group).
  • Removes cardboard boxes from various locations in the building and delivers them to the recycling container at the dock.
  • Transports IGB equipment and/or visitors to and from locations such as airports, hotels, and Campus locations (including Campus Surplus) for the facilitation of operational needs, storage, and special events.
  • Coordinates daily with daytime BSW regarding joint responsibilities. Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Physical Demands

Physical Requirements: Physical requirements may involve some lifting, walking and standing for long periods of time. The incumbent must possess manual dexterity and the ability to lift heavy objects (~100 lbs.)


Work Environment: Work is mostly performed inside the Institute for Genomic Biology, with occasional outside work which could include running errands and transporting visitors to and from the Institute. This position will require the ability to effectively perform duties while interacting with a wide variety of personalities, and to effectively deal with constant interruptions. This position requires the ability to handle the pressure of working under deadlines, coupled with the ability to work with diverse personality types. The person in this position is called upon to perform many different types of tasks which may require adjusting work priorities based upon the situation and the needs of the Institute.

Minimum Qualifications

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read, understand and follow complex technical instructions.
  • Knowledge of general cleaning methods, and the ability to learn specialized techniques.
  • Ability to operate custodial equipment and machinery.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of computers, including general office software and electronic mail.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills are required.
  • Must demonstrate good customer service skills and must promote, establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Must be flexible as demands change.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 0502 - Research Facility Attendant position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 11/1/2025. The salary for this position is determined by collective bargaining agreement for AFSCME Local #399D, with a minimum salary of $22.61/hour (40 hours per week). Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints.
