Data Governance Coordinator

Division of Management Information (DMI)

The University of Illinois Urbana- Champaign invites applications for a Data Governance Coordinator. The Data Governance Coordinator will lead and manage the data governance initiatives at the university, collaborating closely with university leadership, the Data Governance Board, data stewards, data governance committees, and other stakeholders to execute the institution's data governance vision. The coordinator will partner with these stakeholders to develop and maintain data governance policies, ensure data quality, and foster a culture of data stewardship across the university. As part of our innovative and flexible work culture, this position operates within a hybrid work environment, allowing a combination of remote and on-site work.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary data governance liaison between university leadership, data stewards, data governance committees, and other key stakeholders.

• Partner with stakeholders to develop, improve, document, and implement data governance policies, standards, and procedures to ensure data quality, integrity, privacy, and security.

• Facilitate stakeholder meetings to obtain feedback and address concerns related to data governance.

• Present data governance information and recommendations to leadership.

• Collaborate with data governance groups and offices at the System, UI Chicago, and UI Springfield to optimize processes and promote the secure and effective use of data within a federated data governance framework.

• Lead data governance projects.

• Coordinate with data governance bodies to facilitate progress on deliverables and ensure projects are delivered on time and within scope.

• Coordinate and document the development of processes and tools for monitoring and ensuring data quality.

• Track project milestones, escalate roadblocks to leadership, and conduct regular status reviews with project teams.

• Publish regular updates through newsletters and the data governance website.

• Work with data stewards and other stakeholders to maintain data dictionaries, glossaries, and metadata repositories to ensure transparency and consistency in data usage.

• Provide training and resources to support data stewards in their roles.

• Partner with stakeholders to promote data literacy and develop and deliver training that supports the university's data governance objectives.

• Work with data stewards to ensure proper data governance practices are aligned and followed across departments.

• Work with stakeholders to ensure adherence to data privacy and information security policies, identify potential data risks, and develop and implement strategies to mitigate them.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree.

• A total of one (1) year (12 months) in education, training and/or work experience in the related area of data governance, data management, and/or information management. (Note: Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.)

• Demonstrated experience with data governance principles and practices.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree.

• 3 years of experience in related field (e.g., data governance, data management)

• Relevant certifications (e.g., DGCP, DGSP, CIMP, IGP, CDMP).

• Demonstrated experience with data governance tools and technologies (e.g., data catalogs, data lineage tools).

• Demonstrated experience in project management and stakeholder engagement.

• Demonstrated experience with change management.

• Demonstrated experience in higher education data environments.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Attentive to detail, organized, and flexible in an environment of multiple projects and continually shifting deadlines

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills

• Ability to complete projects independently and work as part of a team on projects

• Knowledge of relevant regulations and standards (e.g., FERPA, GDPR)

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search. The salary range for this position is $65,000-$80,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
