Job Summary

Employees at this level work in the Recommissioning/Retro Commissioning group and are highly skilled specialists in their classification who are able to measure the efficiency of building systems and provide customized solutions. The individual needs to be proficient in troubleshooting, repairs, maintaining, and installing Systems and Controls equipment on campus and perform routine maintenance as assigned.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Evaluates, troubleshoots, and repairs ventilation systems. Performs test and balance work on ventilation systems including measurement, evaluation, adjustments, and documentation. Able to view temperature control system web pages and interpret data as needed.
  • Review/analyze HVAC systems and identify and documents deficiencies in existing systems. Assists in prioritizing and determining the most appropriate corrective work to resolve maintenance and operational needs. Our goals are to improve space conditions, provide preventive maintenance and promote energy conservation.
  • Proactive in identifying and bringing forward energy conservation items and practices.
  • Prepare and or review small project plans; provide cost estimates based on plans, and specifications; reviews site of proposed work to determine parameters and constraints. Assists in developing project scope, budget and obtaining quotes. Assist Capital Project Commissioning and Inspection group and Engineering staff as directed, conducting inspections and calibration verification for capital projects.
  • Create current system diagrams for all ventilation equipment systems and revise based on new design and submit to record management for permanent documentation.
  • Give overall holistic building overview which may include ventilation, pipefitting, electrical, controls, and building envelope aspects to identify and reduce overall energy use.
  • Coordinate day to day work scheduling directly with building managers and building occupants.
  • Maintain notes and records of changes made during recommissioning process in each building. Including documentation to be entered into AIM.
  • Assists in the assignment and direction of work, coordinate own work scope to align with other crafts and trades work, verifies and approves and attains material requisitions of employees being supervised. Direct other crafts on work identified that falls outside shop’s classification (i.e. masonry shafts in need of repair, motor bearings, roof leaks, etc.).
  • Provide training to others within the group as needed. Provide trade specific training to sheet metal ReCx Mechanics new to the group.

    A. Physical Requirements
    • Could require climbing ladders, working around all types of mechanical equipment (moving parts), and working from platforms.
    • Based on the two-hand occasional lifting of up to 70lbs, the occasional two-hand pulling of 100lbs, and the occasional unilateral pushing of 97lbs, the Sheet Metal Worker functions at the Very-Heavy Physical Demand Level.
    • Could require considerable amount of walking, climbing and making repairs in tight spaces.
    • Usually requires manual dexterity.
    B. Work Environment
    • Work is generally in classrooms, labs, equipment rooms, vaults and sometimes steam tunnels. Environment contains heat, cold, dust, noise, and toxic chemicals.
    • May work around radiation and/or biohazardous chemical with proper training

    Minimum Qualifications

    1. High school diploma or equivalent.

    2. A current/valid journeymen card through the Sheet, Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation International Association Union (SMART) OR (4) years (48 months) of work experience as a sheet metal worker.

    3. Based on institutional requirements, a current/valid State of Illinois driver’s license for the type of vehicle(s) to be operated.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • A working knowledge of air conditioning, ventilation, exhaust, and kitchen equipment systems.
    • Skill in the use of tools and equipment of sheet metal work including those necessary for testing and balancing.
    • Basic computer skills including word processing and the ability to email.
    • Ability to read blueprints.
    • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
    • Possess journeyman level skills in sheet metal work.
    • Working knowledge of safety procedures.
    • Preferred SMARTA certification for air balancing.

    Appointment Information

    This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4273 - Sheet Metal Worker position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 9/22/2025. The wage for this position is $46.23 per hour.
