Job Summary

Coordinate resources for individuals who are associated with the University of Illinois and are requesting auditory access, with a priority on students; schedule sign language/tactile/oral speech interpreters and real-time captioning for University of Illinois students, staff and members of the public in a wide variety of settings per requests received by Disability Resources and Educational Services (DRES). Schedules and assigns all auxiliary aids and services related to auditory access for students documenting a hearing disability, ensuring service providers are qualified to provide effective communication access.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Establish a collaborative working relationship with a diverse University population documenting auditory communication barriers, with critical consideration of cultural and communication experiences.
  • Supervise and support the professional service providers, including ASL interpreting staff and contracted providers/vendors. This includes communicating with faculty, staff, and students to obtain preparation materials for communication access and sharing prep materials with interpreters and captioners in a timely manner.
  • Assist with the arrangement of resources needed by service providers to perform the duties of their work, (e.g. arranging for parking passes, ID cards, course management access, email addresses).
  • Schedule and arrange the provision of sign language/tactile/oral/cued speech interpreters and real-time transcription such as CART.
  • Work with faculty/campus stakeholders as needed to assess appropriate strategies for inclusion & accommodation.
  • Establish independent contractor/vendors and work with DRES Accounting Associate to complete contracts and purchasing.
  • Maintain data about service usage and resource needs to facilitate appropriate DRES budget planning.
  • Technology and equipment: partner with the DRES Access Technology Specialist to identify critical technology that will be needed to facilitate auditory access, such as assistive listening devices, lecture-capture tools, etc., as needed.
    Inventory and reorder, as necessary. Stay current on emerging technology to provide the most appropriate access options and related equipment. Coordinate with vendors to borrow, demo, or purchase effective technologies and tools.
  • Work with University departments and stakeholders to educate and inform about working with Deaf or Hard of Hearing students, employees, and members of the public.
  • Provide information and/or referral to campus community regarding the process for requesting and provision of sign language interpreters or transcription resources. This includes educating departments on roles and how to effectively facilitate access.
  • Provide resource information and/or referral to service entities outside the University.
  • Provide sign language interpreting on an as-needed basis for students and staff in a wide variety of University settings, and for members of the public attending University events (may include weekend and evening hours).
  • Participate in various DRES service, education, and research activities as well as college and campus committees. Participate regularly in meetings with other Illinois offices providing disability accommodations to students, employees and members of the public, and larger University access committees, as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field.
  • A total of two (2) years (24 months) in education, training and/or work experience providing deaf resources, such as sign language interpreting, transcription, scheduling of deaf services, or related field.
  • Fluent in American Sign Language.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s or graduate degree in applicable field.
  • One year of sign language interpreting experience.
  • Three years of related experience working with Deaf community and individuals with hearing disabilities.
  • Experience working with deaf service vendors.
  • Experience billing practices for deaf service providers, such as interpreters, CART and other transcribers, captioning, etc.
  • Experience with scheduling deaf auxiliary aids and services.
  • Current or prior sign language interpreting certification.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of access needs and resources for individuals with hearing disabilities.
  • Interested in diversity (including disability) issues.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 8/18/2025. The salary range for this position is $65,000 - $80,000 with final amount Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective, bargaining agreements, and budget constraints.
