The Senior Human Resources Generalist provides guidance on a variety of human resource activities and manages complex human resource-related issues within a designated portfolio. This position will play a crucial role in fulfilling School of Chemical Sciences’ staffing needs, with a focus on visa and green card processing. May be asked to mentor or train others.
Job Summary
The Senior HR Generalist manages a variety of human resource activities, provides strategic guidance on a variety of human resource activities, and manages complex human resource related issues.Duties & Responsibilities
HR Information Systems and Appointments Management
• Responsible for managing employee appointments and records, and the interaction between multiple types of appointments to result in appropriate pay and employee status information.
• Enters routine and non-routine data, pulls routine and non-routine reports, developing new reports as needed.
• Ensures accuracy of input data, resolves any discrepancies, considers long-term data retention and data integrity.
• Participate in appropriate systems testing and provides feedback.
Job Classification and Analysis
• Oversees job classification and analysis processes for designated groups.
• Assists with the development of internal-to-unit classification strategies.
• Provides expertise on job analysis and evaluation.
• Identify out-of-scope duties and recommend title changes based on overall responsibilities, as appropriate.
HR Compliance and Policy
• Ensures adherence to HR policies and legal requirements through tracking, training, and internal reviews.
• May develop and implement internal compliance strategies.
• Provides expertise on HR policies and legal requirements.
Payroll, Time Reporting, and Leave Management
• Process all payroll and timesheets.
• Process all required pay adjustments.
• Acts as a resource for other HR professionals on applicable processes and policies.
• Assist with the development of and implementing of related guidelines.
• Responsible for overall unit management of FMLA, PLFA, or other managed leave categories.
• Counsel and resolve complex or sensitive issues related to leave.
• Informs and advises employees on complex regulations/policies relating to leave usage and time reporting.
Recruitment and Talent Acquisition
• Responsible for independently coordinating search, hiring, and onboarding processes for roles at all levels in all employment categories applicable to the unit, including recruitment efforts.
• Communicate with applicants and new hires, facilitating interview, hiring, and onboarding processes.
• Communicate and implement search procedures aligned with best practices and compliance needs, advising search committees and hiring managers.
• Contribute to overall hiring plans, providing guidance on search strategies aligned with talent needs (e.g., multi-level searches, search timing).
• Oversee advertising and branding efforts/improvements.
Required Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Administration, Management, Organizational Administration, Public Administration, Labor Relations, Business Administration or a field closely related to the position.
2. Three (3) years (36 months) of work experience performing professional-level human resources duties.
3. Demonstrated experience working with employee management systems and /or other HR reporting tools and experience researching and interpreting HR policy.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of three (3) years of progressive work experience that demonstrates strong ability to research, interpret and make recommendations based on HR policy.
- Visa experience.
- Experience working in a union environment and interpreting contract language.
- Experience with common computer applications and demonstrated ability to learn new programs.
- Experience providing human resources in a University setting.
- Experience in documentation, training, search and hire practices, work authorizations, and/or appointments processing.
- Project management training and/or experience working on HR information systems projects.
- Familiarity with human resources management principles, theories, and concepts.
- I-9 Tracker, ANA, PARIS, and Webi, or the ability to swiftly learn and adapt to multiple technology application platforms.
Knowledge of ISTART visa application processing for international faculty and scholars, BANNER, HRFE, Cornerstone, JDxpert.

Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5020 - Human Resource Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline. The budgeted salary range for the position is $63,000 - $75,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule (remote work and in-person work in Champaign-Urbana each week) after an initial on-site training period, per the University of Illinois workplace flexibility guidelines https://cam.illinois.edu/policies/hr-87-2/. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
