The School of Chemical Sciences is searching for a Spectroscopist to provide the overall administrative direction for the Mass Spectrometry Lab facility, including billing, planning for new equipment, and implementation of current and future services within the facility to support research in the School of Chemical Sciences. The Spectroscopist will manage safety and train student users on the self-service and open-access instruments and oversee their operation of the instruments. They will oversee the operation of the mass spectrometry laboratory, including directing samples to the appropriate technique, being responsible for maintenance of laboratory equipment, and a general oversight of the other employees of the laboratory. The Spectroscopist is responsible for consultation with users (both internal and external) regarding the appropriate techniques for analysis and for developing procedures and completing analysis of samples submitted for mass analysis.Duties & Responsibilities
- Operate mass spectrometers, analyze samples. Techniques include MALDI, GCMS, LCMS, MSMS, ESI, EI, CI, FD, FI.
- Communicating and consulting with students, faculty, and post-doctoral users about their mass spectrometry needs. Facilitate training and develop training protocols for self-service and open access instruments.
- Maintain the technical testing agreements for users outside UIUC, and ensure their samples are analyzed in a timely manner and answer their questions and research needs. Oversee FBS and billing for the Mass Spec Facility.
- Routine maintenance and repair of the instruments including management of service contracts, service calls, normal instrument maintenance, and gas management for the lab.
- Supervise staff and part-time student employees in the Lab.
Required Qualifications
PhD in Chemistry or other related field. 2 years of experience running mass spectrometry experiments.
Preferred Qualifications
5 years experience running mass spectrometry experiments.
Successful Candidates Will Have
- Knowledge of various Mass Spectrometry techniques including GCMS, LCMS, ESI, MSMS, MALDI, MALDI TLC, and MALDI imaging, ion mobility
- Knowledge of developing specific methods for these techniques, unique to various research needs

Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline date. The budgeted salary range for the position is $85,000 - $95,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements.
