Job Summary
To perform skilled mechanical work on automotive vehicles, grounds maintenance equipment, construction type equipment and other various types of equipment used by the various sections and departments within the University.Duties & Responsibilities
- Repairs automotive equipment (such as alternators, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, pumps, and carburetion systems).
- Install and/or replaces worn or broken parts as needed for repairs.
- Disassembles and performs partial and/or complete overhaul of engine transmissions, differentials, and other assemblies and sub-assemblies.
- Uses gauges, special tools, and specialized testing equipment such as electronic diagnosis equipment, infrared machine for exhaust emissions, air conditioning recharging machine, etc.
- Installs/repairs and/or adjusts brakes as needed.
- Performs wheel Balance and alignments.
- Operates vehicles to diagnose problems and validate that repairs have been completed.
- Constructs, maintains or services shop equipment as necessary.
- Repairs equipment and machinery as necessary.
- Performs duties of previous level in series, as required.
- Repairs all types of engines (gasoline, diesel, etc.).
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Possession of a valid driver’s license as required by the State of Illinois for the type of motor vehicle(s) to be operated by the incumbent.
3. Any combination totaling four (4) years (48 months) from the following categories:
A. Coursework in automotive body repair, automotive mechanics technology, or a closely related field as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
- 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
- Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
- 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
B. Successful completion of a certification test by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) equals one (1) year (12 months).
C. Professional (i.e., full-service commercial, military, governmental, educational) work experience performing general mechanical work on various types of vehicles.
Possession of a valid State of Illinois driver’s license. Obtain a valid State of Illinois Class B Commercial driver’s license with endorsements for air brakes and passenger bus within probationary period, which must be maintained throughout the duration of the employment period in the position. Obtain a Class C underground storage tank certification within probationary period, which must be maintained throughout the duration of the employment period in the position. Obtain ASE Certification within probationary period, which must be maintained throughout the duration of the employment period in the position.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of Campus Garage preventive maintenance procedures.
- Receives verbal and written instructions, with the expectation of performing the work with minimum supervision.
- Working knowledge of general ignition systems, synchronizing equipment, vacuum and test gauges, brake testing equipment, wheel alignment procedures, light testing equipment, automatic transmissions, air conditioning, power steering, wheel balancing, etc.
- Must be capable of making repairs on a large variety of types of vehicles and equipment.
- As vehicle and equipment manufacturers use more sophisticated methods and components, the Automotive Mechanic's job knowledge must be expanded to include the capability of diagnosing problems and making repairs of these components.
Appointment Information
The unit will be filling three vacancies. These are 100% full-time Civil Service positions, appointed on a 12-month basis. The hourly rate for this classification is $31.25.
