Academic Advisor - Illinois Global Studies

Illinois Global Studies in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences is searching for an Academic Advisor to advise Global Studies students and provide key program administration and communication services for the LAS Global Studies program.

Duties & Responsibilities

Advising

  • Provide academic advising for Global Studies students who are majors, minors, and prospective students
  • Provide academic advising for students pursuing certificates in the program
  • Coach students in developing individualized interdisciplinary plans of stud
  • Serve as representative to college-level advising committees and IlliAAC
  • Monitor student progress via major plans of study, transcripts and DARS, and provide overall coordination of student academic records
  • Serve as the primary advisor for in-coming transfer students and students on academic warning (formerly known as Academic probation)
  • Advise holistically, connecting students to opportunities as well as supportive resources on-campus
  • Provide counseling on post-graduate work, professional or graduate school, and general career pathways

Program Administration

  • Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum development (capstone options, independent studies, and internship academic credits)
  • Develop and disseminate promotional and advising materials for the program
  • Coordinate and support recruitment and yield efforts [promoting the major at fairs, conducting information sessions, Meeting with the Division of Exploratory Studies (formerly known as the Division of General Studies), serving on panels, working with the Office of Undergraduate Advising and LAS on recruitment and yield activities, including IlliniFest, Lift-Off, etc.]
  • Build relationships with other offices, departments, and programs by serving on campus committees that are relevant to Global Studies
  • Coordinate with LAS Records Officers and work with other college-level advisors for retention efforts
  • Lead registration, including course registration and major plans of study, for new Global Studies students
  • Collect and tabulate data on enrollment, awards, and alumni activities. Analyze data with LAS Global Studies teamCreate and administer student surveys on how to improve the Global Studies program and tabulating data. Analyze data with LAS Global Studies team
  • Represent Global Studies in commencement activities, including participation in planning committee and ceremonies
  • Network and collaborate with LAS International Programs (i.e., study abroad/education abroad) and international area studies centers on opportunities for undergraduates

Communications

  • Create content and maintain other social media sites
  • Coordinate and support weekly newsletters for Global Studies students focused on course and curricula announcements, opportunities abroad, campus events, and career preparation

Teaching and Student Mentoring

  • Teach a career development course - GLBL 225 each fall and spring semester
  • Co-teach and serve as administrative lead for the Global Studies at Illinois seminar
  • Serve as primary advisor and mentor of the Global Studies Leaders program, including reviewing proposed activities, training of officers, and coordinating combined activities with staff

Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree
  • Two years of mentoring, counseling or advising experience; international experience either through international study or work

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in the Social Sciences
  • Formal academic advising experience
  • Experience with supporting student internship opportunities
  • Classroom teaching experience

  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, with a wide range of on-campus and off-campus constituencies.
  • Demonstrated effective organizational, communication, interpersonal, analytical, and assessment skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work from a strengths-based advising perspective.
  • Demonstrated ability to track and assess student academic progress.
  • Knowledge of academic skills and student development issues associated with undergraduate student populations, especially those that require enhanced advising and academic skills support.
  • Excellent intercultural skills and a commitment to inclusive practices.
  • Ability to use and learn UIUC systems such as DARS, BANNER, ATLAS, and Toolbox applications and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work with computer database applications; demonstrated ability and commitment to work with culturally diverse groups.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline date. The budgeted salary range for this position is $53,000 - $58,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements. Hybrid work options may be available for this position, with the ability to be on-site at the Champaign-Urbana campus as needed per the University of Illinois workplace flexibility guidelines- https://cam.illinois.edu/policies/hr-87-2/. Sponsorship for Work Authorization is not available for this position.
