Department of Journalism: Specialized Faculty-Rolling Search
The Department of Journalism at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks applicants to fill one or more Specialized Faculty positions. These positions are non-tenure track and will be between zero to 100% time, depending on the Department's needs. Specialized Faculty teach assigned courses throughout the semester such as sports journalism, broadcast meteorology, news editing, newsgathering, reporting, etc.
General responsibilities:
Responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate level courses for the Department of Journalism in one or more instructional modalities (on-campus, online, or hybrid), mentoring undergraduate students, overseeing graders as needed, and meeting with instructors of other sections when appropriate.
Teaching areas include:
Sports Journalism:
Responsibilities include teaching sports journalism courses. The successful candidates will have significant professional experience in sports journalism and the ability to teach electives in sports journalism.
News Editing:
Responsibilities include teaching news editing courses. The successful candidates will have significant professional experience in news editing, including demonstrated experience in AP Style.
Broadcast Meteorology:
Responsibilities include teaching broadcast meteorology courses. The successful candidates will have significant professional experience in broadcast meteorology.
Newsgathering and Reporting:
Responsibilities include teaching courses in newsgathering and reporting on a variety of platforms. The successful candidates will have significant professional experience in reporting and the ability to teach electives in one or more specialties: community, science, and technology reporting.
Journalistic Writing:
Responsibilities include teaching courses in different styles of writing, including news features, magazine writing, and long-form storytelling. The successful candidates will have significant professional experience in journalistic writing.
Working with the press:
Responsibilities include teaching courses that survey news media relations strategies, building good relations with journalists, writing press releases, handling interviews, and understanding the ethical dimensions of the relationships with the news media. The successful candidates will have significant professional experience in public relations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree in a field related to the course(s) to be taught. Lesser degrees will be considered if accompanied by significant professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
At least five years of professional experience in journalism. Experience teaching and developing courses at the university level.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Academic position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is Fall 2025 and Spring 2026. The budgeted salary for these positions is $8500 for each 3-credit hour semester long course; typical 8-week and 16-week course; to be negotiated based on percentage of appointment. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
