Engineering IT Shared Services supports the nationally ranked Grainger College of Engineering by delivering IT services for teaching, research, and learning to over 1,100 faculty and staff and 10,000+ students. Duties & Responsibilities
Computational System Analysis and Support (50%)
- Advise and assist in the use of computational technology and resources such as the Illinois Campus Cluster
Program, DELTA, Radiant, and Nightingale. - Analyze functional and performance issues associated with use of computational resources, track trends, and
advise customers on the best solutions to meet the needs of the research community. - Analyze policies and queues to solve user or system problems, identify deficiencies, and propose modifications.
- Advocate for the use of centralized services where practical and help implement tailored solutions that meet the
unique computational needs of research teams.
Provide metric-based data to help inform GCOE and individual research investments. - Participate in computational presentations to working groups, and/or projects at the team level.
- Represent and advocate for Grainger Engineering users of shared computational resources across the Illinois
cyberinfrastructure environment as a Technical Representative for GCOE.
System and Network Support (20%)
- Install and configure Linux workstations and servers.
- Plan and maintain patching, security, and other endpoint management of Linux workstations and servers.
- Consults on networking for Linux systems to optimize network connectivity and access to relevant resources.
- Consult with customers on installation and use of software applications, including interfaces with network
connections and optimizing systems for best performance. - Complete most work with limited supervision, appropriately judging when to seek assistance or guidance from
subject experts or management. - May require emergency response or maintenance work outside of normal working hours.
Customer Service and Support (15%)
- Deliver excellent customer service by responding to requests in person, on the phone, or via email in a timely,
polite, and professional manner. - Work on a team of IT professionals supporting the instructional, research, or administrative customers of the
College of Engineering. - Work with units, teams, and individuals to provide the unique technological needs for their instructional,
research, and administrative technology environment. - Work to build relationships with customer community by proactively communicating relevant information and
discussing their needs, initiatives, and service levels through periodic meetings. - Work to resolve customer satisfaction issues.
- Reach out to advanced computational users to better understand their needs.
- Engage with research teams on long-term projects or the development of technical solutions.
Project Management (5%)
- Manage projects at the team level and drive deliverables and results by designated deadlines.
Organizational Support (5%)
- Participate constructively in meetings with relevant, concise and reasoned analysis; facilitate and lead meetings.
- Interact with various teams across Engineering IT Shared Services to ensure outstanding service delivery to
customers. - Work on cross-functional teams, with limited authority for final decision making.
Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field. Three years of work experience in IT, or a related field. The skills must also include the following: • 4 years of experience with Microsoft Active Directory, LDAP, or other directory service. • 3 years of experience with the tools and systems used by researchers across a range of disciplines such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, etc. • 4 years of experience in the application of IT security concepts. • 6 years of experience troubleshooting desktop and computing applications and hardware. • 6 years of experience working in a customer service environment.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5031 - Information Technology Technical Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. The budgeted salary range for this position is $93,829. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. This position is primarily on-site, at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus, with the potential to do some hybrid work as needed per the University’s Workplace Flexibility policy.
