Job Summary
The Veterinary Technician General assigned to Urgent and Convenient Care will be responsible for general assistance in the South Clinic of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and may be asked to assist in other areas of the hospital, including the Primary Care and Zoological Medicine Service. Due to the teaching emphasis of the hospital, the Veterinary Technician (Urgent and Convenient Care) may be responsible in assisting in the training of veterinary students, veterinary technician students and others in diagnostic and therapeutic techniques and emergency procedures.Duties & Responsibilities
- Learn to provide standard paramedical technical assistance and nursing care in a professional and courteous manner.
• Perform standard technical procedures, as directed by staff veterinarian which includes but is not limited to: collect and submit blood, urine, fecal, and other biological samples; inoculate prepackaged media; prepare and restrain animals for procedures; monitor and record in a health information system vitals, symptoms and treatments; remove and apply bandages; insert catheters; give enemas; pass stomach tubes; etc.
• Assist with medical exams and prepare, administer and dispense medication and fluids under the direction of a staff veterinarian.
• Recognize emergency conditions and irregularities and report to staff veterinarian.
• Learn to evaluate and institute appropriate treatment.
• Set up, assist, demonstrate and clean up after procedures such as ultrasonography, catheterization and ECG.
• Monitor patients during procedures and during patient recovery for vital signs.
• Learn to triage incoming patients to determine their eligibility for admission thtough the Urgent and Convenient Care service based on presenting complaint and presumed health status.
• Learn to communicate and coordinate with other specialty VTH services as well as Emergency and Critical Care Service to facilitate patient flow.
• Learn to work effectively and cooperatively with Urgent and Convenient Care and Primary Care faculty, Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Assistants, Customer Service Representatives, Customer Service Specialists, students and members of other hospital services to maintain high quality patient care and client experience. - Learn to clean, supply and maintain clinical areas and equipment.
• Clean, supply and maintain student technical laboratories, treatment rooms, exam areas, laboratories, storerooms, rounds areas.
• Inventory and maintain stock levels of supplies and controlled substance records.
• Operate, clean, and provide routine maintenance of equipment and instruments used within the service, including but not limited to: endoscopes, refractometers, centrifuges, respirators, nebulizers, incubators, suction units, fluid pumps, enteral feeding pump, Doppler blood pressure, oxygen cages, defibrillator, dental and anesthetic equipment.
• Assist with the cleaning and sterilization of surgical/dental instruments. - Learn to maintain communications for the service with clients and referring veterinarians and enter information into our Health Information system.
• Respond to client inquiries and schedule appointments, client call backs, provide client and/or referring veterinarians with information about section/service area procedures and the cost of services.
• Admit and discharge patients.
• Enter charges for procedures, laboratory tests and drugs and supplies into the Health Information System. Assist with the mailing of samples to outside labs. - Assist with and learn to provide orientation and training of veterinary students and veterinary technician students.
- Other duties as assigned
• May be asked to assist in other areas of the hospital including Primary Care and Zoological Medicine.
Additional Physical Demands
An environment of stress may be anticipated, hence, the person in this position must be capable of reliably functioning in such an area. Exposure to anesthetic agents may present a potential hazard. An ability to work in the presence of animal waste and fluids will be necessary. To some degree, unpleasantness may be experienced under such conditions. The handling of any animal presents some element of risk or injury. Persons allergic to animal dander, dust, pollen, hay, etc., may experience discomfort in this position. Work involving animals with various disease states may expose the individual to viral, bacterial, and fungal agents known to be transmissible to man. Exposure to chemicals and anesthetic waste gases may be potentially hazardous if mishandled or misused. Skill in performing tasks is required to operate equipment, administer medications, and restrain animals of various species for examination. Syringes, needles, and medications are potentially dangerous and must be used with care. The amount of physical exertion will vary with assignments. For example, the technician should be able to lift a 40lb. dog on and off an examination table. Some strength and considerable caution are required when working with a large animal (i.e., cattle and horses) during diagnostic or surgical procedures.Minimum Qualifications
1. Successful completion or current enrollment in the final semester of a veterinary technology program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
2. Must obtain CVT license within 6 months of employment
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- • Veterinary Technician Certification must be maintained throughout employment. • Familiar with federal regulations and university and hospital polices regarding the use and handling of controlled substances. • Skill in the operation of surgical, laboratory and diagnostic equipment. • Able to adapt to new technologies, procedures and equipment. • Demonstrate adherence to strict protocols. • Able to instruct veterinary medical/technician students in patient care protocol and procedures and in the use of equipment or instrumentation. • Able to recognize abnormalities in vital signs of patients, assess charges observed, and take necessary action in the absence of a veterinarian. • Able to operate on the clinical floor and anticipate needs and directions of staff and students regarding patients and methods of care. • Able to observe, record, compile and assimilate data. • Able to explain terminology used in veterinary medicine. • Knowledge related to the care and handling of anesthetic waste gases. • Able to multi-task, pay close attention to details and work calmly and professionally under pressure. • Strong interpersonal skills. • Courteous and polite.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4080 - Veterinary Technician (General) position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The work schedule is Monday - Friday, 2:30 PM - 10:30 PM. The expected start date is as soon as possible. The collective bargaining agreement sets a wage of $22.79. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
