The Department of Earth Science and Environmental Change (ESEC) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a full-time Lecturer position. We seek an outstanding educator with expertise in the field of solid earth geoscience, including structural geology, mineralogy, igneous/metamorphic petrology, tectonics, geochronology, or mineral exploration. Candidates with significant fieldwork and laboratory experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will contribute to the department’s teaching mission by delivering engaging and innovative instruction across a range of learning environments. The Lecturer will be responsible for teaching both introductory and upper-level courses, including Structural Geology and Mineralogy, and will supervise graduate teaching assistants. While the focus of the position is teaching, the candidate is strongly encouraged to mentor undergraduate students in research.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate courses in structural geology, mineralogy, and introductory geology in various formats, including large and small classroom settings, field and laboratory environments, and online instruction.
- Develop and implement innovative teaching strategies to enhance student learning.
- Supervise and mentor graduate teaching assistants.
- Participate in curriculum development and assessment efforts.
Qualifications
Candidates are required to have a PhD degree in geology, Earth Science, or related areas in hand by start date, and a record of teaching effectiveness at the graduate and/or undergraduate levels
SALARY AND APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
This is a full-time, 9-month appointment (paid over 12 months), non-tenure track position. Renewal of the position is possible and contingent on the availability of funding, strong enrollments, and strong performance reviews.
Target start date is August 16, 2025. The budgeted salary for the position is $58,000-62,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements.
The successful applicant could be eligible to receive additional salary in the summer from additional service provided through grants or summer teaching.
