The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences is searching for a Senior Human Resources Generalist to perform a variety of HR related duties in support of faculty and administration for the School of Chemical Sciences. LAS is home to 15,000 students; 1,300 faculty and staff; and over 186,000 alumni. The college is home to more than 65 units and 70 plus majors. Job Summary

The Senior Human Resources Generalist provides guidance on a variety of human resource activities and manages complex human resource-related issues within a designated portfolio.

Duties & Responsibilities

Coordinate the visa process:
• Advise, coordinate, and process all visas for international faculty and academic visitors.
• Possess advanced knowledge of work authorization limitations and remain current with USCIS legislation updates.
• Serve as point of contact to the university’s International Student and Scholar Services Office, the visa applicant, and external counsel, as applicable by coordinating the petition, legal posting requirements, and payment for the application.
• Communicate with high-level University System Offices to review departmental requests for employees to work outside of Illinois.
• Deliver visa documents to recipients and process I-9/I-9 reverifications, and answering questions or directing recipients to the appropriate office.

Hiring:
• Provide insight and recommendations on non-standard requests for unique hires/situations.
• Engage with supervisors on hiring needs; actively support units and supervisors in the development and monitoring of job descriptions; collaborate with Talent Acquisition Specialists; may assist with HR search processes.
• Coordinate and process Extra Help, Academic Hourly, Retiree Rehire, and Affiliate hires.
• Consult campus resources and collective bargaining agreements on appropriate offer letter templates and salary minimums and ranges.

Assist with the development, implementation, and analysis of HR programs:
• Resolve complex employee requests, providing coaching and support.
• Assist supervisors with monitoring and ensuring compliance.
• Assist with development, implementation and analysis of HR programs.
• Coordinate HR activities related to minors and unit summer camps; ensure compliance with applicable policies, procedures and laws.
• Mentor and train HR colleagues as needed.

Support the full cycle of complex human resources activities:
Appointments and Payroll
• Review, evaluate, and process employee-related transactions for graduate student, visiting scholar, and hourly (academic grad and extra help) appointments; monitor applicable payroll and processing
dates; process adjustments.
• Oversee the bi-weekly payroll process for multiple units within a portfolio.
• Provide guidance/recommendations on various appointment requests.
• Point of contact for new employee onboarding and exit processes; participate in the ongoing review of processes.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Administration, Management, Organizational Administration, Public Administration, Labor Relations, Business Administration or a field closely related to the position. Two (2) years (24 months) of work experience performing professional-level human resources duties. Demonstrated experience working with employee management systems and /or other HR reporting tools. Experience researching and interpreting HR policy.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum of three years of progressive work experience that demonstrates strong ability to research, interpret and make recommendations based on HR policy. Visa experience. Experience working in a union environment and interpreting contract language. Experience with common computer applications and demonstrated ability to learn new programs. Experience providing human resources in a University setting. Experience in documentation, training, search and hire practices, work authorizations, and/or appointments processing. Project management training and/or experience working on HR information systems projects.

  • Knowledge of University and Campus policies related to Human Resources including but not limited to those listed in the Campus Administrative Manual, Provost’s Communications, and Policies and Rules.
  • Knowledge of ISTART visa application processing for international faculty and scholars, BANNER, HRFE, Cornerstone, JDxpert, I-9 Tracker, ANA, PARIS, and Webi, or the ability to swiftly learn and adapt to multiple technology application platforms
  • Working knowledge of University of Illinois business and human resources policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with human resources management principles, theories, and concepts.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5020 - Human Resource Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline. The budgeted salary range for the position is $63,000 to $75,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements. Sponsorship is not available for this position. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule (remote work and in-person work in Champaign-Urbana each week) after an initial on-site training period.
