Deputy ADA Coordinator for IT Accessibility

ADA Coordinator's Office

Reporting to the Director and ADA Coordinator, this position is responsible for providing subject matter expertise, support, and guidance to campus with respect to compliance with university electronic information technology (IET) accessibility policies, related technology best practices, and state and federal compliance requirements. Duties include working with the IT Accessibility Liaison Program and coordinating the EIT accessibility exception process.

Duties & Responsibilities

Subject Matter Expertise and Guidance

  • Serves as a resource for and provides advice and guidance to campus faculty, staff, and students on issues of technology accessibility.
  • Provides technical expertise on the interpretation of and implications for current IT accessibility related laws and regulations affecting University policies and procedures to the Director, ADA Coordinator.
  • Receives digital accessibility barrier reports and supports barrier removal in collaboration with relevant offices and stakeholders.
  • In conjunction with the Director, ADA Coordinator, participates in regular evaluation and updating of the university ADA Transition Plan, in consultation with relevant University offices and stakeholders.
  • Supports the mission, function, and administration of the ADA Coordinator Office.

Training and Climate

  • Coordinates, develops, implements, presents, and reviews training programs for university faculty, staff, students, campus units, and other groups affecting the campus.
  • Assists with identifying strengths and limitations of existing campus technology accessibility efforts and makes recommendations for improvements.
  • Conducts assessments of faculty, staff, student, and visitor attitudes and perceptions of their experiences to better understand factors contributing to technology accessibility problems and successes.
  • Develops and maintains educational and informational materials on technology accessibility and related University policies and procedures.


Data and Reports

  • Collaborates on the collection and analysis of data regarding campus accessibility as it relates to IT access for faculty, staff, and students and makes data-based recommendations.
  • Ensures the accuracy of institutional data and oversees compliance with required reporting under state and federal laws related to technology accessibility.

Relationships

  • Works closely with the Director, ADA Coordinator; Accessibility and Accommodations Division of the Office for Access and Equity; Disability Resources and Educational Services; Technology Accessibility Review Committee; the Office of the Provost; IT Accessibility Liaison Group; and other key stakeholders.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, assistive technology, or other fields that may relate to this position’s responsibilities
  • Three or more years of professional experience remediating digital content for accessibility under Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) standards and identifying alternative formats for digital content, conducting digital accessibility evaluations, responding to digital accessibility-related grievances or barriers to access, or comparable experience demonstrating the position’s requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in higher education with faculty, staff and/or students to improve EIT accessibility or prior experience working in a comparable role. Prior experience drafting and advising stakeholders on EIT policies and procedures. Prior
    experience supporting the implementation or review of reasonable accommodation
    requests.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of federal and state laws regarding digital accessibility and digital accessibility standards, including WCAG, Illinois
    Information Technology Accessibility Act (IITAA), Titles I and II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and Section 504 of the
    Rehabilitation Act.
  • Working knowledge of universal design as it applies to digital accessibility compliance.
  • Working knowledge of current HTML, CSS, JavaScript, ARIA standards and best practices.
  • Familiarity and experience with current assistive technologies including text to speech, screen readers, and assistive listening devices.
  • Knowledge of various alternative formats and alternative technologies that enable people with diverse abilities to
    communicate, participate, and perform tasks.
  • Strong communication skills for explaining complex issues and accessibility standards.
  • Strong organizational, planning, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with limited oversight and with sound judgement.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage high volume and time-sensitive workload and to meet demanding deadlines.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after May 16, 2025. The budgeted salary range for the position is $75,000 to $85,000. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
