Job Summary

As a member of the Dean's Executive Leadership Team (ELT), the Head will serve as the principal administrative and academic officer for the Department of Biomedical and Translational Sciences. Employment may be at 50% to 100% FTE within the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, with effort assigned as a 50% FTE administrative role dedicated to fulfilling the duties as Department Head on a 12-month service basis. Any remaining effort (up to an additional 50% FTE) may be assigned or considered based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, and interests, and employment as aligned with the needs of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, including possible opportunities to serve the other missions of the college (teaching, research, scholarship, innovation, and service). Candidates must be eligible to hold faculty appointment in the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, preferably at the rank of Professor with tenure; opportunities may also exist for concurrent appointment in other colleges/units with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This position will report directly to the Dean of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine.

Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Governance:

  • Serve as a member of the college Executive Leadership Team (ELT).
  • Provide visionary leadership and direction for the department.
  • Develop and implement the department’s strategic goals and priorities in consultation with the faculty and college leadership.
  • Collaborate with other members of the ELT to recommend, establish and implement policies appropriate to the BMTS department within the University’s organization.
  • Define the organizational structure needs for the department; lead the faculty in development and revisions of bylaws, policies, and procedures that will align with departmental and college missions, including provisions for shared governance where applicable.
  • Collaborate with Finance & Administration, and Academic Affairs on issues related to planning and budgeting for the department.
  • Uphold departmental compliance with Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation standards and other designated professional standards.

Faculty Recruitment, Engagement, and Evaluation:

  • In consultation with the ELT and others involved in curricular, educational, and research planning, establish a comprehensive recruitment and retention plan for high quality biomedical and engineering faculty and departmental staff; recommend additional faculty and physician educator hires for delivery of the Carle Illinois curricular programs.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and oversight of faculty processes related to recruitment, appointment, retention, evaluation for promotion (and tenure if applicable), professional development, leaves, faculty awards and recognition.
  • Nurture faculty development in instruction, research, scholarly activity, innovation, service, and advising across all ranks.
  • Oversee the growth and development of the Health Innovation Professorship (HIP) program with recruitment and retention of HIP faculty to further advance the missions and strategic plan of the college.
  • Provide annual faculty evaluations, engage in mutual goal setting and support the policies and procedures related to promotion in rank, including evaluation for indefinite tenure when applicable.
  • Oversee professional development and annual evaluation and goal setting for departmental staff in employment classifications other than tenure system and non-tenure system faculty.

Curricular Collaboration:

  • Assign teaching, service, and leadership roles for faculty, in coordination with Academic Affairs for some defined roles.
  • Work with faculty, other department heads in the college, and Academic Affairs to develop, refine, and provide oversight in the delivery of the biomedical and engineering components of the curriculum as approved by the Curriculum Oversight Committees. Our medical and graduate program curricula integrate engineering, design, clinical competencies, and incorporation of innovative concepts in health care and wellness.
  • Provide support for faculty and Academic Affairs leadership to engage in discussions to continuously improve the curriculum and its delivery, encourage interdisciplinary collaboration to create more valuable student and faculty experiences.
  • Contribute to a culture of transparent decision-making, professional accountability and shared successes.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • M.D., D.O., or Ph.D. in a discipline related to the Carle Illinois College of Medicine.

Experience:

  • Senior faculty status, such as Full Professor, and leadership experience in a department, institute, center, or program of study in a research-oriented academic institution.
  • Must have an established record of research in a field relevant to the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, such as biomedical sciences, engineering, education, or health innovation.
  • Successful experiences with facilitating and conducting externally sponsored research.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Established record reflecting successful communication with stakeholders including faculty, other administrators, staff, alumni, students, benefactors, and business partners.
  • A strong personal commitment to integrity as well as to the ethical values and professional responsibilities associated with medical education incorporating biomedical sciences, engineering concepts including robust technology and data, and clinical competencies.
  • Must have a record of highly ethical conduct, a sense of respect for confidentiality, and a high level of professionalism and collegiality.
  • Ability to develop and implement collegial collaborative partnerships with faculty across disciplines and medical professionals engaged in clinical practice and service to educate medical students.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and experience with conflict management/resolution.
  • Experience with and knowledge of faculty and academic structures, policies and procedures at the University of Illinois.

Appointment Information

This is a 0-50% Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis with up to additional 50% considered based on candidate's qualifications, experience, and interests, and employment. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close date. The budgeted salary range for the position is $175,000 to $225,000 for 100% full-time appointment. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available to begin this position or continue in this position.
