Director, Title VI Coordinator
Office for Access & Equity
The Title VI Coordinator for the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign will provide expertise, guidance and oversight to campus-wide efforts to ensure compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This will include leading the office that receives and is responsible for all reports of discrimination, harassment, and related retaliation based on race, color, and national origin, including shared ancestry and ethnic characteristics; as well as coordinating efforts reasonably calculated to eliminate any hostile environment, remedy its effects, and prevent its recurrence.
Duties and Responsibilities
Complaint process oversight
- Ensure that complaints and grievances related to the claims of discrimination on the basis of on race, color, and national origin, including shared ancestry and ethnic characteristics are appropriately handled. This includes having primary responsibility to develop policy and procedures for the Title VI Office and to provide guidance to campus leadership on relevant campus policy.
- Ensure the accuracy of institutional data and required reporting under state and federal laws related to discrimination and misconduct on the basis or race, color, national origin, shared ancestry, and ethnic characteristics.
- Supervise and train Title VI Resolution Specialists and other Title VI Office staff.
- Oversee considerations of free speech/academic freedom conducted by Resolution Specialists in the course of processing reports.
- Maintain and update the Title VI case management database and run reports from the database to answer queries from campus partners and external agencies.
Compliance oversight
- Provide advice, guidance, and oversight regarding compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and other federal and state laws and regulations, at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus.
- Interpret current regulations affecting relevant University policies and procedures.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for external agencies in the area of Title VI compliance.
- Develop and maintain MOUs, protocols, and collaborative relationships with leadership and staff in key university offices (UIPD, OSCAR, EEO, University Housing, Provost, etc.) to ensure that campus responds appropriately to relevant allegations of discrimination and harassment.
- Review published materials including websites to ensure the accuracy of published information on how to report discrimination or retaliation.
- Identify if patterns, recidivism, or collective incidents exist that may warrant additional response campuswide in specific programs or activities, including when the conduct occurs.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge and awareness of developments in relevant areas of Civil Rights law.
Training and Communication
- Lead, develop, implement, present, and review annual training programs and trainings on request for University faculty, staff, campus units, (UIPD, OSCAR, EEO, University Housing, Provost, etc.) and other groups related to Title VI law and regulations.
- Publicize to the campus external training opportunities from relevant external organizations.
Other duties as assigned
- Serve on relevant committees at the campus and system level.
- Leverage relevant committee and governance structures in order to facilitate compliance with Title VI.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree in a related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school

- Strong leadership and personnel management skills.
- Ability to make good, consistent and fair decisions.
- Ability to design, develop, and present effective training and educational programs to a variety of audiences on Title VI topics.
- Ability to plan and implement programs with quantifiable results.
- Strong organizational, planning, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work with colleges and academic units across campus.
- Demonstrated ability to manage high volume and time-sensitive workload and to meet demanding deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative and diverse environment.
- Awareness of the necessity to maintain confidential and neutrality.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after May 19, 2025. The budgeted salary range for the position is $115,000 to $130,000. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
