Job Summary
Focuses on proactive outreach to Student Affairs to reduce cybersecurity risk through a range of strategies including consultation, training, advising and implementation of cybersecurity standards and controls. Works to identify and advocate for new and/or modified IT services that will strengthen Student Affairs' overall security and compliance. Works in partnership with the campus identity, privacy and cybersecurity team, acts as a primary advisor to management on forward planning related to cybersecurity, and resolves information security incidents and other adverse information security events.Duties & Responsibilities
- Customer Service and Support:
• Conduct regular system and network audits to identify and remediate unmanaged endpoints and security vulnerabilities for Student Affairs.
• Consult regularly with Student Affairs Technology Leadership to learn about and understand their specific needs in support of the units of Students Affairs and promote cybersecurity best practices and solutions.
• Work to build relationships with the customer community at various levels of the unit by proactively communicating relevant information and discussing their needs, initiatives, and service levels through periodic meetings.
• Facilitate remediation, recovery, and reporting of proven or suspected exposure or disclosure of protected information between unit and campus security.
• Facilitate the completion of internal infrastructure, systems and third party risk assessments as required by the security framework.
• Facilitate reporting of security metrics to Student Affairs Technology Leadership and the campus cybersecurity team.
• Coordinate unit-level efforts on regulatory compliance, including completion of periodic surveys and assessments.
• Advise and assist Student Affairs Technology customers in the completion of required compliance documentation as part of the campus procurement process (e.g. Lightweight Risk Assessment, Privacy Impact Assessment, New Software Form, and Accessibility).
• Advise and assist Student Affairs Technology customers in addressing University policies as well as state and federal regulations regarding Cybersecurity (e.g. data security, access controls, licensing, accessibility, privacy).
• Building and maintaining a network of IT professionals on and off campus who do similar work.
• Actively engage with the campus identity, privacy and cybersecurity team to advocate for, evaluate, and process policy exception requests. - Organizational Support:
• Recommend new standards, policies, or services to support cybersecurity for Student Affairs.
• Collaborate with functional teams within Student Affairs Technology to ensure outstanding service delivery to the customers.
• Working and leading cross-functional teams, with limited authority for final decision making.
• Coordinate annual campus cybersecurity training ensuring staff compliance.
• Develop training and other educational materials.
• As needed, supervising student/hourly employees, including the assignment of tasks, performance management, etc.; may also serve as a mentor/coach to junior staff. - Project and Task Delivery:
• Managing projects at the organizational, divisional, or team level and drive deliverables and results by designated deadlines.
• Completing individual projects and tasks assigned by the supervisor on time with quality.
• Actively seeking out and delivering solutions to unresolved problems inside and outside of the organization.
• Develop and maintain familiarity with and basic understanding of campus services that can fulfill regulatory compliance needs for projects and/or sensitive data handling. - Other duties as assigned.
Additional Physical Demands
The majority of work will be within an office work environment, however visits to othercampus locations can be expected.
Work can involve lifting and moving equipment, media, and peripherals approximating 30-
35 pounds. Position involves accessing all areas of the building.
This position is eligible for in-person or hybrid work arrangement.
Minimum Qualification
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Any one or any combination totaling seven (7) years from the following categories:
A. Work experience in IT-related functions, such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field.
B. College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
- 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
- Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
- 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
- Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months) - Demonstrated experience in IT operations or service delivery.
- Demonstrated experience in a customer service environment.
- Demonstrated experience with troubleshooting Windows operating systems.
- Demonstrated experience with security best practices.
- Demonstrated experience with malware analysis or incident response management.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in a Technology related field.
- Experience with Apple OS and iOS in an enterprise environment.
- Experience with computer protection applications, such as anti-malware, anti-virus, and system firewalls.
- Experience using technology tools to optimize delivery of IT services, such as endpoint management, system imaging, or centralized configuration solutions.
- Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following domains: Secure IT Operations, Data Security, Incident
- Response and Analysis, Digital Forensics, Network Security, Systems and Applications Security, or Vulnerability Management.
- Demonstrated experience using Endpoint Management tools such as MECM, Crowdstrike, Qualys, Veam.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of Cybersecurity, networking services, network connectivity methods, and diagnosing network problems and essential network services, such as DNS, DHCP, VoIP, and/or VPNs.
- Knowledge of enterprise endpoint management solutions, such as Microsoft MECM, Intune, Munki, Workspace ONE, etc.
- Knowledge/understanding of common regulatory policies that are commonplace in the Higher Education environment (ex. HIPAA, FERPA, CUI, ITAR, Export Control, CMMC).
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to lead groups of peers in cross-functional groups assigned to tasks or project work. Knowledge of existing IT services and Cybersecurity solutions in support of research/instruction.
- Ability to effectively communicate and professionally interact with all staff levels and customer groups.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize requests, and escalate appropriately.
- Ability to think analytically to identify root problems and corresponding solutions.
- Ability to adhere to 'chain of custody' requirements for security incidents as needed.
- Ability to adhere to confidentiality constraints for security incidents as needed.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5031 - Information Technology Technical Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 5/10/2025.
Salary Information: The budgeted salary for this position is $75,000 to $95,000.
Hybrid Position: This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule (remote work and in-person work in Urbana-Champaign each week).
