Job Summary

Responsible for supervision of the staff, student employees, and operations in the dining hall, retail and for catering events. Receives direction and oversite from the dining location Unit Manager (FSA III) in Dining Services. Assists implementing overall policies, procedures, and operations. Supervisors will engage and implement University Housing's diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Staff Supervision
    Supervises, trains, and assigns production tasks for culinary staff, sanitation laborers, and student employees.
    Hires and schedules student employees.
    Addresses performance concerns in accordance with established procedures.
    Assists with performance evaluations and documenting performance of employees.
    Prepare bi-weekly student and fulltime employees’ timekeeping records and approvals.
    Conduct full-time and student employee meetings.
  • Manage Service Delivery
    Supervises front-of-the-house service area and the presentation of food served.
    Coordinate coverage of staff duties and student tasks, including ensuring health code and sanitation expectations are followed.
    Responsible for the general appearance and operation of a dining room or retail location.
    Coordinates and assists in the preparation of food and maintaining supplies.
    Assist in planning and serving at banquets and special functions.
    Communicates with Food Service and Unit Manager regarding the planning of menus and special events.
  • Administrative
    Manage the dining service unit in the absence of the Food Production Chef and the Unit Manager.
    Assists in ordering, requisitioning food and supplies from various vendors.
    Assists in supervising recipe standardization in the unit.
    Participates in menu management and departmental meetings.
    Maintain accurate production records: inventory, actuals, and forecasting.
    Check in food deliveries and rotate stock in the absence of a storekeeper.

  • Additional Physical Demands

    Physical Demands: Position works in a kitchen area which is heated by ovens and stoves. Position may involve light lifting, frequently moving through assigned events and remaining in a stationary position for long periods. Position may involve occasional moderate lifting and cooking when the unit experiences a shortage in personnel.

    Working Conditions: The work is performed in an Industrial Kitchen where there is some discomfort in low temperature areas (-10 degrees F) and/or high temperature areas (90 degrees F). There is risk involved when working with dangerous machinery, wet floors, and exposure to open flames.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent.

    Rate of Pay:

    The rate of pay for Extra Help Food Service Supervisor positions start at $27.37 per hour. The rate of pay is determined by the job description submitted by the department.

    Work Schedule:

    We offer short or long-term assignments up to 900 hours, which is about 6-months of full-time work. Employees can work either full or partial days and full or partial weeks.

    Extra Help Positions:

    Extra Help employees are appointed to fulfill casual or emergent needs within units. The amount of time for which services are needed is not usually predictable and payment for work performed is on an hourly basis and based on actual hours worked. Extra Help employees do not receive holiday pay or paid sick or vacation leave.

    Extra Help employees are required by State Universities Civil Service System rules to take a 30-calendar-day break after working 900 hours. At the end of the 30 days, you may begin another 900-hour employment cycle in a new position if available. Working Extra Help will in no way affect any other employment opportunities with the University of Illinois, including your position on and Civil Service register.
