Job Summary

The Visiting Research Laboratory Technician will conduct laboratory, field, and greenhouse work on the function and expression of photosynthetic genes for the RIPE project.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Processing plant tissue for RNA analysis (including RNA isolation, cDNA synthesis and qPCR)
  • Conducting field and greenhouse experiments (including planting, tissue collection, minor maintenance, taking physical and gas exchange measurements, harvesting and processing harvested material)
  • Data entry, processing, and statistical analysis of the gathered data, and provide written summaries of these statistical analyses

Additional Physical Demands

Work is performed in laboratory, greenhouse, and field settings. Sometimes it is required to work outside in higher temperatures. You will be a vital part of a team committed to the development of biotechnologies that will be freely available to and will lead to better seed for poor farmers in sub-Saharan Africa and SE Asia, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. We are particularly interested in candidates who will share our commitment to achieving this end.

Minimum Qualifications

B.S. degree in biochemistry, physiology, biology or other related disciplines; and proven laboratory research experience including adherence to safety protocols and understanding of current research methodologies.

Preferred Qualifications

M.S. degree in biochemistry, physiology, biology or other related disciplines; and two years' laboratory and field research experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Background in plant biology.
  • Well-developed active listening and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently but also as part of a team.
  • Proficiency with computers, especially Excel and MSOffice
  • Ability to maintain written records.
  • Willingness to learn and in turn, train others.
  • Proactive in problem solving; self-sufficient.
  • Knowledge of RNA extractions and qPCR for gene expression.
  • Knowledge in plant growth and plant health in field and greenhouse settings.
  • Knowledge in statistics and experimental designs, and supporting software.
  • Knowledge in operating plant physiology-related equipment.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 11/25/2024. The budgeted salary range is $45,000 to $59,000. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints.

This appointment may be renewable annually during the start of the academic year subject to periodic reviews that include continued participation in theme-related activities, compliance with university policies, and upholding of IGB’s commitment to providing an inclusive, diverse, and welcoming environment.
