Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) work is central to the mission of the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In recent years, higher education broadly has centered critical issues such as ensuring access to education, promoting equitable distribution of resources, addressing social justice concerns through research, and fostering a sense of belonging on campus for everyone. The College of ACES at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has underscored the importance of these topics by creating the new ACES Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in January 2024. This strategic move marks a commitment to cultivating an equitable and inclusive academic environment for everyone in the college.

Coordinator of DEI Education

POSITION SUMMARY:

Coordinate educational opportunities within the College of ACES for students, faculty, and staff to increase understanding of topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This work includes providing direct educational experiences for members of the ACES community, as well as developing and executing strategies that promote DEI initiatives and professional development opportunities.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Facilitate programs, trainings, workshops, and other educational opportunities for faculty, staff, and students
  • Develop curriculum tools and supports for ACES faculty related to DEI topics; organize filming and editing of video recordings for DEI training purposes
  • Serve as a guest speaker for ACES courses to discuss DEI topics when requested by faculty
  • Develop and execute strategies that enhance participation in DEI educational opportunities
  • Provide support to ACES’ Inclusion websites by creating, editing, and/or adding resources related to DEI topics
  • Serve as an IT Accessibility Liaison for the College of ACES
  • Participate in DEI professional improvement opportunities when appropriate for the role
  • Grow connection to other faculty and staff at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign providing DEI educational programming
  • Assist in implementation of DEI summer programming specifically aimed at underrepresented minoritized student groups
  • Other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean for DEI

POSITION REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

Required:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in education or related field.
  • At least one year of experience in public speaking and/or facilitating trainings.
  • Experience developing and/or implementing DEI education initiatives, training, or leadership.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in education or related field.
  • Experience teaching in person, online, and active learning modalities.
  • Experience presenting to and working with diverse audiences.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, especially in delivering effective oral presentations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of general cultural competency and nuanced understanding of DEI-related topics.
  • Understanding of DEI topics as related to areas of study represented in the College of ACES

SALARY AND APPOINTMENT DETAILS:

This is a full-time (100 FTE%) Program Coordinator appointment. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. The budgeted salary range for this position is $58,000 to $68,000.

Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position. Out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the start date for this position.
