University Housing - Housing Maintenance Operations

University Housing is looking for a highly motivated skilled carpenter to support repair functions in University Housing residence halls, dining centers and apartment communities who has a good background in providing quality service to a diverse customer base. All University Housing staff will engage and contribute to a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion within University Housing.


Job Summary

Perform work requiring skill in the trade of carpenters. All University Housing staff will engage and contribute to a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion within University Housing.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • May include repairs on floors, ceilings, doors, sash, screens, wood shingles, modular furniture, manual projection screens, cooling towers, classroom seating, tablet armchairs and other duties peculiar to and normally required in the trade of Carpentry.
  • May include installation of partition walls, ceiling, floor coverings, new doors and door hardware, modular furniture, shingles, trim, cabinetry, concrete formwork, scaffolding, windows, and other duties peculiar to and normally required by the trade of Carpentry
  • Install many types of shelving, white and display boards, plaques, clocks, fire extinguishers, pictures and all other types of wall hangings normally required in the trade of Carpentry.
  • Re-screening screens and preparing openings for window AC units.
  • Assembly and disassembly of furniture.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Additional Physical Demands

    Position involves performing physical activities that require considerable use of one’s arms and legs and moving one’s whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, squatting, grabbing, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, stretching, twisting, reaching and handling of materials in the course of completing work assignments.
    Position involves standing and performing work duties for an extended period of time in the process of completing projects and/or assignments.

    Minimum Qualifications

    1. High school diploma or equivalent.
    2. Successful completion of a recognized carpenter apprenticeship program or four (4) years (48 months) of full-time journeyman-level Carpenter experience (the trade for this purpose shall include work normally performed by carpenters, millworkers, floor layers, and any other classifications encompassed within the scope of work included in these trade categories).
    3. As required by the position to be filled, current license/certification consistent with vehicles, machinery, and equipment that is routinely used in the general occupational area.

    Dependent upon institutional need, incumbents may be required to obtain job-related certification or license, such as a valid Illinois Department of Public Health Lead Abatement Worker License.     Specialty Factors

    Possession of a valid State of Illinois driver’s license.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures such as highways and roads.
    • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, regulations and strategies to promote health and safety practices for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
    • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.
      • This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
    • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, and other office procedures and terminology.
    • Skill in time and resource management.
    • Skill in personnel resources management through motivating, developing, and directing subordinates as they work, identifying the best skillsets for completion of the job.
    • Skill in giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
    • Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
    • Ability to operate personal computer with a general understanding of application software, and an understanding of the Internet.
    • Ability to work in an environment with diverse staff and students.

    Appointment Information

    This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 0683 - Carpenter position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is October 7, 2024. This is a bargained position and as such, the salary is driven by the collective bargaining agreement. The entry-level salary for job title Carpenter is $40.10/hr.
