Job Summary

The primary function of the Laborer-Electrician is to replace burned-out lamps, clean light fixtures, maintain lamp records, recycle waste lamps, and interact with campus community and customers, supervision, peers and other F&S employees.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Check and replace all defective lamps all interior spaces and exterior wall pack fixtures in buildings throughout campus. Cleaning, repair or replace broken/ damaged diffusers/ lens filters.
  • Report any electrical repairs needed, maintain inventory, and proper procedures for discarding waste lamps in accordance with EPA/University guidelines. Have a working knowledge of lamp technology and compliance with Campus Energy Conversation Program.
  • Assists in setting up, using and taking down scaffolds, ladders, and lifts.
  • Assists and trains new employees. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

    Work Environment:
    1, Must adhere to F&S safety and health policies.
    2. Must be able to work amid hazards of work sites such as exposure to chemicals, heat, cold, dust, fumes, noise, animals, in climate weather, steam tunnels, laboratories, coal fired power plant, and mechanical rooms.
    3. Must be able to maintain a good working relationship with supervision, peers, employees, customers, and the campus community. Mutual dignity and respect being the key to good working relationships.
    4. Receives daily oral instructions from Supervisor of Building Craftspersons, Foreperson, as well as Superintendent of Building Maintenance.
    5. Must be able to walk, climb, bend, and crawl in order to access any work area such as attics, crawl spaces, false floors, ceilings, and scaffolds. Must be able to work at heights on lifts, scaffolds, ladders of all types, and bucket truck for lengths of time. Must be agile and able to work safely in traffic areas on ladders
    6. Must listen carefully to instructions given by trainers and supervision in order to successfully complete training requirements.
    7. The employee is expected to support the Mission, Vision, Values, Guiding Principles and management operational directions and philosophies of Facilities and Services by exemplifying high standards of leadership, loyalty, craftsmanship, and dedication.

    Physical Demands:
    1. Position involves working safely in traffic areas on ladders, aerial lifts, scaffolds, or bucket truck for lengths of time.
    2. Position involves carrying or helping carry various sizes and weights of ladders and scaffolding.
    3. Position involves climbing stairs, ladders, and light towers.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Possession of a valid State of Illinois driver’s license at time of hire.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • A working knowledge of basic electrical skills and lamp technology including LED, high intensity discharge, fluorescent, and incandescent.
    • A working knowledge of hand tools and the basic mechanical skills to remove and replace/repair all kinds of lamps, lenses, and diffusers.
    • Ability to work in a self-managed environment with limited supervision.
    • A working knowledge of safety procedures.
    • Ability to constructively interact and collaborate with co-workers and the campus community.
    • Ability to follow and give direction.
    • A working knowledge of proper waste lamp disposal and Campus Energy Conservation Program.

    Appointment Information

    This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 2240 - Laborer-Electrician position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search close date. A collective bargaining agreement sets a wage of $21.24/hour for this position. Work authorization sponsorship is not available for this position.
