McKinley Health Center - Medical Clinic

McKinley Health Center aims to provide high-quality ambulatory healthcare and health education to students and medical expertise to University leadership. The Center is also accredited through the Accreditation Associate for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Our staff works on campus with an academically talented and ethnically diverse student population, including international students totaling 22.2 percent of the total student population, 18.8 percent for Asian American students, 11 percent for Latinx/e students, 5.0 percent for African American students, and 3.2 percent for multiracial students, with a total enrollment of over 56,000 students.
Job Summary
Primary responsibility of working with high-risk University of Illinois students for the Mental Health unit with McKinley Health Center. The patient base requires additional support due to complex mental and physical need. Facilitate the coordination of care and education among McKinley Health Center and other campus units to help support and serve as a point of contact to students with mental health challenges, help support triage and provide some administrative functions with the unit. Serve as a liaison between McKinley Health Center providers and the student through monitoring, communication and continuation of care.Duties & Responsibilities
Case Management
- Provide mental health case management and treatment plan support for students experiencing varying degrees of mental illness.
- Utilize a system or evaluation tool for determining the level and frequency of support needed by individual students.
- Monitors limits to counseling visits and advocates for long-term counseling resources when needed.
- Facilitate students’ connections to internal and external resources for initiation and/or continuation of mental health treatment. Resources include, but are not limited to, McKinley Health Center providers, other campus resources, community-based or telemedicine providers, specialized treatment programs, crisis services and hospitals.
- Assist with transitions and support for students following an absence due to mental health in order to ensure necessary supports are in place.
- Engage in systematic follow-up for at-risk students.
- Serve as a point of contact for students, parents, and medical/mental health providers.
- Participate in the development and delivery of mental health programs, patient education and training for staff and students.
Clinical Support:
- Collaborate with unit/medical leadership and the Office of the Dean of Students for the withdrawal and re-entry processes for students with voluntary or involuntary leaves of absence, or extended illnesses.
- Facilitate collaborative practice among primary care, mental health, and health education providers that may include interdisciplinary case conferences.
- Serve as a liaison to the behavior intervention and suicide prevention teams.
- Provide back-up coverage for triage and some administrative nurse/unit manager functions.
- Attend meetings as assigned.
Data Management/Reporting
- Collects and maintains current information about available community resources.
- Maintain current and accurate health records in an electronic health record system.
- Prepare data or reports as needed.
Personnel & Quality Improvement Related Responsibilities:
- Participate with new provider and staff orientations.
- Participate in search and interview processes.
- Engage in ongoing monitoring and evaluation of practices, systems, and processes that impact patient care.
- Collaborate with unit leadership in developing, implementing, and evaluating applicable policies and procedures.
- Participates in committees and task forces as assigned by the Director or unit leadership.
- Support accreditation activities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree with a major in the social or behavioral science or related health specialty from an accredited college or university.
- OR
- Master's degree in social or behavioral science or related health specialty area from an accredited college or university.
- One (1) year (12 months) of progressively more responsible full-time experience in the practice of social services/ agencies or medical/clinical setting maintaining acceptable standards of social work practice.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to work with a diverse population of students of varied ages and backgrounds.
- Knowledgeable of legal and regulatory requirements specific to mental or behavioral health.
- Ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with campus and community resources.
- Ability to communicate difficult/sensitive information professionally and with regards to privacy rules.
- Maintain professional skills and knowledge through continuing education.
- Present a positive image of MHC with all interpersonal communications.
- Judgment and decision-making skills in order to choose appropriate patient care options.
- Ability to function effectively in an ambulatory health care setting providing numerous primary medical services to a diverse university population, including thorough assessment and teaching skills. Ability to prioritize and handle urgent/emergent situations.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4260 - Medical Social Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 10/1/2024. Salary range is set at: $51,000 - $57,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
