The Office of Strategic Initiatives at the University of Illinois System is actively engaged in supporting the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) on various initiatives aimed at advancing public health outcomes across the state. The Office of Strategic Initiatives is seeking a highly motivated individual to assist the Illinois Department of Public Health Violence and Injury Section (VIPS) to perform the duties of Violence and Injury Section Evaluator for Suicide Prevention and Firearm-Related Harm Reduction. This staff would support the program with data analysis, evaluation, any institutional review board (IRB) submissions and tracking, and outcome reporting. This staff would be responsible for assisting in preparing, generating, and disseminating data for quarterly and annual reporting for funders. The role also involves engaging with stakeholders and various other partners, including the possibility of working with or receiving information from Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) at IDPH or with outside stakeholders managing these violence and injury section projects.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Collecting, compiling, analyzing, and interpreting primary and secondary data
  2. Reporting key performance results to internal and external stakeholders affected by the programs
  3. Work with a team to determine what processes and policies can be improved based on evaluation findings
  4. Develop and implement project-specific project models
  5. Provide guidance to IDPH and external stakeholders on program metrics that should be included in evaluation criteria
  6. Coordinate and track information that may or may not overlap with studies covered with an IRB approval required for evaluation efforts
  7. Work with Suicide Prevention Coordinator and VIPS staff to satisfy all evaluation requirements for VIPS programs
  8. Create internal data repository for use by IDPH staff
  9. Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in evaluation sciences, public health, epidemiology, social sciences, emergency management, project management, health sciences, or related field
  • Hybrid position working occasionally in IDPH offices
  • Up to 20% travel, mostly in Illinois, which could be on short notice
  • Attend events being evaluated, including evenings and weekends as necessary

Preferred:

  • MPH in epidemiology


KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Required:
1. At least one year of evaluation experience, one year of experience collecting and conducting comprehensive analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data, one year of experience developing and reporting performance metrics
2. Knowledge of the Institutional Review Board process and policies
Preferred:
1. At least one year of experience serving as an evaluator on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration programs
2. Ability to prepare high-quality, professional summary reports, documents and presentations that detail the evaluation questions, design, results, discussion, and outcomes of the study
3. Experience designing, modifying and delivering formal and informal technical assistance to ensure data quality including the use of various forms of computer-based and communication technologies, training curricula, and presentation materials
4. Experience identifying, developing and/or designing a preliminary evaluation design, evaluation instruments, data collection plan, data dictionary, data analysis plan, and questions to be addressed by the evaluation study
5. Experience developing a system for data collection tools that shall include data validation and cleaning
6. Proficient computer skills and advanced knowledge of applicable computer systems, including Microsoft Office programs: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint
7. Ability to work in a hybrid or remote environment
8. Ability to work well independently as well as a part of a team
9. Ability to work in a dynamic fast-paced environment
10. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
11. Excellent analytical skills
12. Ability to perform duties with the utmost accuracy and attention to detail
13. Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, and build strong positive relationships

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
This is a Full Time academic professional position. The expected start date is 5/4/2026. Sponsorship for Work Authorization is not available for this position.

The budgeted salary range for the position is $70,000.00 - 80,000.00. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
