The Cannabis Research Institute at the University of Illinois currently seeks a Visiting Laboratory Manager with a background in Molecular Biology and/or Analytic Chemistry to join the Cannabis Research Institute at the University of Illinois to supervise and coordinate genomic and chemistry research on hemp and cannabis samples from across the state of Illinois, in association with the Illinois Department of Human Services and the Cannabis Regulatory Oversight Office. This research is conducted with hemp and/or cannabis, DNA or RNA extraction, PCR-based molecular techniques, and analytical chemistry, primarily in a high-throughput manner, and is complemented by a strong background in either molecular biology or analytical chemistry. Most work will consist of establishing high-throughput methods and laboratory experimentation. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise the daily operations of the laboratory, ensuring that all samples and associated data are properly tracked and that samples are processed
  • Perform a wide range of molecular biology and/or analytical chemistry techniques related to genetic or chemical analysis of hemp or cannabis samples
  • Closely interact with different collaborators to facilitate experimental processes, including ad hoc analysis such as comparison of methods and procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized laboratory environment, including daily logs and sample tracking using the LIMS.
  • Develop and maintain quality assurance(QA)/quality control (QC) procedures and conduct QC on datasets
  • Maintain proper notebook documentation and clear records of experimental work.
  • Assist with routine maintenance of lab instruments, samples, and reagents, and assist other researchers in the lab when needed.
  • Initiate and maintain appropriate licensing and compliance documents at the University, State, and Federal levels.
  • Ensure the proper function of the laboratory by ordering necessary consumables and equipment and maintaining proper levels of stock to keep the laboratory running smoothly

QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Bachelor's degree in molecular biology and/or analytical chemistry
  2. 5 or more years of experience in a high-throughput chemistry or molecular biology lab

Preferred:

  1. Master's (or higher) degree in molecular biology and/or analytical chemistry
  2. Experience with a wide range of molecular biology methodologies, and/or analytical chemistry (HPLC, HPLC/MS, GCMS)
  3. Direct experience with DNA/RNA extractions from complex samples (i.e. not solely pure culture), DNA sequencing using Illumina or Nanopore sequencers, Taqman diagnostic PCR assays, HPLC/HPLC-MS, GCMS, extensive experience troubleshooting PCR, sequencing, or chromatographic separation
  4. Familiarity with basic concepts of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

LABORATORY

  • Hands-on experience with PCR set-up, analysis, and troubleshooting
  • DNA/RNA manipulation
  • DNA and RNA extraction
  • Familiarity with DNA/RNA quality
  • Experience in High-throughput workflows
  • Experience in Chemical extraction
  • Experience with BSL2 processes
  • Experience with PCR and qPCR
  • Must be able to operate general laboratory equipment such as balances, centrifuges, pipettes, and mixers
  • Ability to learn how to operate new instrumentation, such as digital PCR or robotic liquid handling systems.
  • Hands-on experience with sequencing library preparation and sequencing run setup
  • Hands-on experience with chromatography (LC and/or GC) and chemometrics, including solvent-based extraction of plant material
  • Ideal candidate must be motivated, organized, and disciplined, with excellent record-keeping skills and a superb attention to detail.
  • Sterility (aseptic technique)
  • Chemistry background (solution preparation, molarity calculations)
  • Controls, quality assurance type work
  • Documentation systems (spreadsheets, digital imaging)
  • Standard computer skills for file transfer across the internet
  • Ability to effectively communicate as part of a team is essential.
  • Ability to work independently, without direct supervision.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize complex tasks to meet deadlines.

ADMINISTRATIVE

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating, and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Must have excellent computer aptitude, including proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet software
  • Must have a high degree of personal integrity, must be able to multitask, be hygiene-oriented, quality and safety conscious.
  • Comfortable working independently and within a team environment
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and attention to detail
  • Takes responsibility for management of research laboratory, including inventory control, equipment maintenance, supply management, and general care for the laboratory environment, maintenance of compliance documents, and licensing
  • Able to consistently deliver quality results on time
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, keep accurate records, follow instructions, and comply with institutional policies

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
This is a Full Time academic professional position. The expected start date is as soon as possible. Sponsorship for Work Authorization is not available for this position. System Office jobs such as this one are not eligible for the Referral Program.

The budgeted salary range for the position is $90,000.00 - 100,000.00. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
