Founding Engineer (Robotics) - Avea Robotics
University of Illinois Research Park
About Avea
Avea Robotics is a robotics startup building the foundation for scalable robot teleoperation. Our work focuses on creating robust remote teleoperation frameworks that make it possible to operate fleets of robots reliably and efficiently across real-world environments. By solving these core bottlenecks, we are enabling the leap from one-off demos to robotics at scale.
Our founding team comes from robotics backgrounds at UIUC and we’re looking for the best builders in the world to shape the future of robotics.
Qualifications
As a Founding Robotics Engineer, you’ll work directly with the founders to design and build the core teleoperation system. This is not a narrow role; you’ll have end-to-end ownership and responsibility over fundamental pieces of the robotics stack.
You will:
-
Design and implement core robotics and teleoperation infrastructure
-
Build performant, low-latency systems for real-time robot control
-
Work deeply with ROS2-based systems, while improving and working around its limitations
-
Develop and optimize state estimation, control, and motion-related systems
-
Write high-performance C++ in latency – and reliability – critical paths
-
Collaborate closely with VR, networking, and cloud engineers to build a cohesive system
-
Help define the technical direction of the robotics team and grow it
What We’re Looking For
Truthfully, we don’t care if you’ve checked every box below.
We care that you:
-
Have excellent intuition for robotics and performant systems
-
Think deeply about latency, determinism, and failure modes
-
Can reason about complex systems and make good tradeoffs
-
Are excited to own hard problems end-to-end
Experience in any of the following is a plus:
-
Embedded systems or low-level systems programming (C/C++ or Rust)
-
ROS / ROS2, including a strong understanding of its architecture and quirks
-
State estimation, control systems, or motion planning
-
Optimization of real-time or performance-critical systems
-
Numerical methods, optimizers, or applied math in robotics contexts
If you’re strong and curious, we can teach you the rest!
Why This Role Is Special
-
Founding-level ownership: You’ll help define how the product and robotics stack are built
-
High autonomy: We give direction, then get out of your way
-
Real-world impact: Your work will directly control real robots and shape the future of autonomy
-
Team builder: As we grow, you’ll help shape and lead the robotics team
-
Hard problems only: If it’s easy, we’re probably not interested
