Director of Data Management

The University of Illinois Foundation (Foundation) is the official fundraising and private gift-receiving organization of the University of Illinois (University). It works closely with alumni and friends, faculty and staff, corporations and foundations, as well as campus development professionals to create fundraising programs and opportunities that benefit the University.

The Director of Data Management is responsible for developing the strategic direction, implementation, and resolution management of all data-related aspects within the University of Illinois Foundation. This includes but is not limited to metadata management, records management, data quality assurance, cross-functional data planning, communications and usage and data governance. The role will be pivotal in ensuring that Advancement data assets are utilized comprehensively, effectively, securely, and aligned with business objectives and policies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide strategic leadership in advancing data management capabilities and collaborate with stakeholders to align initiatives with business objectives.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive metadata strategy while establishing Master Data Management standards and best practices.
  • Implement data quality control processes and define metrics to measure data accuracy, completeness, consistency, and timeliness.
  • Develop and implement data governance policies, ensuring compliance with regulations and coordinating with campuses to maintain governance artifacts.
  • Manage and support staff leads and teams, ensuring clear role definitions, effective communication, and leadership of Records and Data Governance teams.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Analytics and Design, Information Systems, Data Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience (10+ years) in a leadership role in data management initiatives, with a focus on metadata management, data quality, and data governance.
  • In-depth understanding of data management concepts, methodologies, industry trends and best practices.
  • Strong knowledge of data governance frameworks (e.g., DAMA-DMBOK) and regulatory requirements (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA).
  • Experience operating modern data management tools and technologies, such as metadata repositories, ETL, ELT, data fabric, tech stack, API’s, data quality tools, and data governance platforms.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a demonstrated ability to drive results and make data-driven decisions.
  • Proven experience in culturally transforming organizations to be data-driven
  • An understanding of advancement concepts, processes and data

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree, with preference for Computer Science, MIS, Software Engineering, Data Management, or business major.
  • Experience in higher education advancement data and applications
