Job Summary

Duties & Responsibilities

• Provide highly skilled paramedical technical support and nursing in the Anesthesiology section with guidance from the anesthesiologist when necessary: responsible for the development of protocols and management of small and large animal anesthetic cases with independence and proficiency. Provide instruction and oversight to students, residents and interns in a professional manner during the perianesthetic period.
  ◦ Under direction of a veterinarian anesthesiologist, prepare or oversee preparation of patient for anesthesia and determine and apply appropriate protocols based on examination of patient and medical record.
  ◦ Under direction of a veterinarian, induce, monitor and recover patients from anesthesia.
  ◦ Operate monitoring equipment and instruments for anesthetic exhaust gas levels in surgical and related areas.
  ◦ Recognize and problem-solve critical, emergent and non-emergent situations.
  ◦ Under direction of a veterinarian, perform or provide oversight of paramedical technical procedures such as epidurals, nerve blocks, arterial catheter placement, etc., and administer medications (including controlled substances) and fluids.
  ◦ Collect and submit blood, urine and other samples as directed by the veterinarian.
  ◦ Record clinical signs, diagnosis, treatment, and supplies used, in addition to proper recordkeeping of the usage of controlled substances.
  ◦ Assist the Chief of the assigned Service in preparing and assembling grade records for students assigned to the service.
  ◦ Organize small and large animal patient movement with other services to and from areas of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital for desired medical procedures (MRI, CT, Wards, Operating Rooms, and Recovery).
  ◦ Maintain a safe environment for students, clinicians, and others when working with fractious patients.
• Assist, direct and instruct students, residents and interns in anesthesia protocols, procedures, patient care, and equipment usage. Orient and train new veterinary technicians in the section. Lead, train and support new technicians in the protocols and procedures of anesthetic case management.
• Other duties performed independently with proficiency and expertise
  ◦ Operate, clean and provide routine maintenance of equipment used within the assigned Service. Provide direction and oversight to others in proper equipment operation and maintenance.
  ◦ Maintain supplies within surgical, treatment and instructional areas, including placing orders and establishing quantities.
  ◦ Dispose of sharps containers and medical waste vials according to safety regulations.
  ◦ Ensure that all supplies and drugs used by the service are not expired.
  ◦ Participate in scheduled on-call rotation to provide anesthesia services for after-hour emergency cases.
• Perform other duties as assigned and as needed.

Additional Physical Demands

Minimum Qualifications

1. Successful completion of a veterinary technology program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
2. Current certification as a Veterinary Technician by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).
3.       A. Three (3) years (36 months) of progressively more responsible paramedical veterinary experience gained as a Veterinary   Technician (GENERAL) or in other positions of comparable responsibility or
          B. Two (2) years (24 months) of progressively more responsible experience gained as a Veterinary Technician I or
          C. Three (3) years (36 months) of progressively more responsible experience in an AVMA recognized specialty or subspecialty, a species-specific specialty area, or a specialized area of the hospital with a subspecialty equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Familiar with federal regulations and university and hospital polices regarding the use and handling of controlled substances.
• Skill in the operation of surgical, laboratory and diagnostic equipment.
• Able to adapt to new technologies, procedures and equipment.
• Demonstrate adherence to strict protocols.
• Able to instruct veterinary medical/technician students in patient care protocol and procedures and in the use of equipment or instrumentation.
• Able to recognize abnormalities in vital signs of patients, assess charges observed, and take necessary action in the absence of a veterinarian.
• Able to operate on the clinical floor and anticipate needs and directions of staff and students regarding patients and methods of care.
• Able to observe, record, compile and assimilate data.
• Able to explain terminology used in veterinary medicine.
• Knowledge related to the care and handling of anesthetic waste gases.
• Able to multi-task, pay close attention to details and work calmly and professionally under pressure.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Courteous and polite.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4848 - Veterinary Technician II position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 12/11/2023. Salary is starts at $25.64/hour.
