Job Summary
The incumbent will provide technical support for the daily operation of the High-Throughput Phenotyping Facility (HTPF) greenhouse, management and coordination of phenotyping experiments, as well as maintain all equipment and systems at the HTPF. The position requires troubleshooting, preliminary data analysis, experimental design for LiDAR and hyperspectral plant analysis systems, and maintaining automated watering and lighting systems. Oversight of the propagation, maintenance and harvest of transformed material is an additional responsibility, along with supervision of Greenhouse Technicians, Extra Help and hourly personnel.Duties & Responsibilities
- Technical consultant and coordinator of RIPE’s high-throughput phenotyping experiments, including:
-Assist researcher with developing the appropriate phenotyping experiments to be conducted with the HTPF Phenospex.
-Perform initial analysis and interpretation of phenotyping experiment results.
-Maintain schedule of research experiments on the Phenospex.
-Maintain phenotyping equipment, including the Phenospex Planteye scanner and analysis software, DroughtSpotter automatic irrigation system and weight system, and maintain Heliocore lighting system.
-Primary contact with Phenospex and Heliocore technical staff.
-Assist with propagation and maintenance of plant material for phenotyping experiments. - Propagation, maintenance, and harvest of transformed material in the greenhouse for seed collection.
- Monitor conditions in the greenhouse including keeping bays clean and sterile to prevent contamination and any pests, application of restricted-use pesticides as required.
- Supervise undergraduate and other hourly appointments.
Additional Physical Demands
Environmental Demands: Greenhouse, laboratory, and field. Ability to work outside,stand, walk, kneel, and stoop for extended periods.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in science, engineering or mathematical field Experience: •Experience with regulated plant propagation and disposal. •Experience in greenhouse research. (3+ years’) •Greenhouse management experience. (3+ years) •Experience with automatic plant irrigation systems (1+ years) •Experience with high-resolution camera systems in the context of plant science. (1+ years) •Familiar with plant phenotyping techniques and analysis. •Familiar with automated irrigation systems. •Working knowledge of basic electronics, sensors and data loggers. Training, Licenses or Certifications Required: State of Illinois restricted-Use pesticide Training and Certificatoin
Preferred Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering or remote sensing.
Experience:
•Experience with troubleshooting greenhouse and phenotyping equipment and data analysis.
•Experience with multispectral/hyperspectral cameras.
•Experience analyzing 3D point cloud images.
•Experience using and programming the Heliospectra greenhouse lighting system.
•Experience with the Phenospex PlantEye scanner and analysis software.
•Experience with the DroughtSpotter irrigation system.
Training, Licenses or Certifications Required: Training on Phenospex phenotyping system. Training on Heliospectra lighting systems. Training on safe autoclave usage.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Required: Advanced knowledge of the Federal Plant Pest Act that gives APHIS the authority to make determinations regarding transgenic plant variety containment requirements, as well as knowledge of all required associated permitting and disposal regulations. Knowledge of Greenhouse phenotyping equipment operations and ability to troubleshoot systems. Understanding of phenotyping data analysis and data analysis software, and proven ability to supervise and work independently and cooperatively with other team members.
- Preferred: Knowledge of plant pest identification and control, experience with data analysis and programming languages.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after after close date. Salary is commensurate with experience.
