The Illinois Global Institute is searching for a Deputy Director who will provide leadership in shaping and executing the strategic vision of the Illinois Global Institute (IGI) under supervision of the IGI Executive Director.  The Deputy Director will also coordinate the efforts of the IGI both internally and on campus, ensuring the successful execution of IGI programs.

Duties & Responsibilities

Illinois Global Institute Administration

  • Serve as a member of the Institute’s executive leadership team, including the Executive Director and Assistant Director; participate in the IGI’s strategic planning process; lead the implementation of efforts to achieve IGI strategy and goals.
  • Represent the Executive Director in matters internally to IGI and externally within the university. Sustain cross-campus liaisons and provide additional representation for the IGI in campus engagement.
  • Participate in budget preparation and the expenditure of unit appropriations, recommend future funding plans resulting from new or modified program requirements.
  • Participate in creating and implementing strategies for advancement and foundation relations for the IGI and its component units.
  • Manage faculty and staff professional development, annual review, and promotion practices;
  • Facilitate quality assurance processes such as program review.

Support the quality of undergraduate and graduate student experiences in area and global studies

  • Lead academic program coordination within IGI units, including LAS Global Studies programs, other undergraduate programs within IGI, as well as other campus units.
  • Develop and execute academic enhancement and cohort-building initiatives for graduate and undergraduate students in within IGI, including professional and academic development opportunities and co-curricular experiences that introduce students to themes and methods across regions and programs of study.
  • Lead instructor for a second-year 4 credit-hour Research and Writing in Area and Global Studies course to be developed by the Deputy Director for graduate students in IGI academic programs to be offered once per year.
  • Organize and coordinate with IGI centers and programs annual calls for student fellowship and scholarship awards, including Foreign Language and Area Studies and IGI Graduate Language Fellowship awards, including dissemination of calls for applications as well as processes for review of applications.

Research

  • Maintain active profile of research and scholarship in area of disciplinary and field expertise related to area or global studies. Effort includes research in area of specialization and dissemination of scholarship in venues such as conference presentations and peer-reviewed academic articles.

Illinois Global Institute Programming and Communications

  •  Direct IGI programming initiatives in collaboration with other campus units.These programs include targeted calls for internal and external funding, forming grant development teams for external calls for grants in area and global studies as well as related humanities and social science fields; Lead the IGI New Approaches grant program for campus-wide innovation in area and global studies.
  • Lead coordination among IGI centers and programs in programming, grant development, and public engagement initiatives; foster collaborative approaches across programs and centers.
  • Develop and lead a strategy to ensure the visibility of programs in IGI units that support faculty development, research, teaching enhancement, study abroad, language learning, and community engagement.Work with the IGI Communications Coordinator to oversee the creation and dissemination of publicity materials and publications, including newsletters, listserv announcements, press releases, and other publicity materials, to execute the Executive Director’s vision. Consult with LAS Marketing and Communications as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • A total of five years in education, training and/or work experience coordinating and/or facilitating humanities and social science programs with international dimensions. (Note: Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.)

Preferred:

  • Master's or PhD degree in area or global studies in a humanities or social science discipline
  • Experience coordinating and/or facilitating area or global studies programs
  • Development experience in grant and/or advancement

Appointment Information

This is a full-time Academic Professional position appointed on a 12 month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline date.  The starting salary for this position is $75,000. Actual starting salary will be determined by the candidate’s credentials and alignment with the position requirements.
