Job Summary
Student Engagement is a department within the Division of Student Affairs consisting of the following teams: Student Organization Development & Administration (SODA), Student Organization Finance Center (SOFC), Student Sustainability, Student Governance, and Spirit & Traditions. The Senior Assistant Director of Student Engagement is a member of the Student Governance and Student Organization Development & Administration teams and has primary responsibilities for advising Illinois Student Council while also providing critical support to more than nine hundred (900) student organizations in the area of event registration, risk prevention, and harm reduction education.
MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Student Governance
Provide support advising Illinois Student Council (ISC) and managing certain administrative components.This position will serve as one of the two primary advisors to ISC, along with others on the advising team.
- Advise Illinois Student Council in the development, implementation, promotion, and evaluation of programs and advocacy that benefit the student body.
- Assist with the promotion of the organization for students to recruit members for a valuable and holistic experience.
- Serve as an advocate and liaison between ISC, Student Engagement, and Student Affairs to the University administration, University Senate, and other various University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and University of Illinois System departments.
- Assist ISC in filling seats on various University and community committees where they have designated student representation.
- Provide institutional and experiential knowledge and support to the members of ISC.
- Design, develop, and facilitate personal and professional development programs leading to individual and group development for students involved in ISC.
- Learn and have a good working knowledge of University policies and procedures to set expectations for student leaders of ISC to successfully navigate their roles.
- Oversee the ISC budget and expenses to ensure compliance with University policies.
- Coordinate ISC and past student government alumni initiatives, including but not limited to developing a University of Illinois Alumni Association Affinity Group, developing outreach and engagement initiatives, maintaining a list of alumni, coordinating alumni events, and connecting alumni with current student leaders for leadership and professional development opportunities.
Student Org Administration
Assist with coordinating integrated and intentional learning experiences of student org events and initiatives for the Department of Student Engagement.
- Assist with the review of all student organization event registrations for adherence to university policies and procedures and local, state, and federal laws.
- Assist with risk prevention/harm reduction education programs and initiatives for all student organizations. This includes facilitating training for student org leaders, including but not limited to hazing prevention, food safety training, and contract consultation.
- Assist with the review of event registrations for potential risk and mitigation levels. Guide student organization representatives through an educative approach. This includes evaluating and developing proactive harm reduction and mitigation solutions for possible risks of activities where students are empowered to make well-informed decisions for the safety and well-being of all.
- Assist with student organization registration, including an independent objective review of each submission to ensure adherence to department and university policies and procedures and applicable local, state, and federal laws. Reviews will also apply best practices to enhance student organization administration.
- Assist with the new and re-activating student organization process from the initial interest of a student wanting to form/reactivate and develop a student organization to a completed registration.
- Assist with the implementation and coordination of university-wide student organization engagement initiatives, i.e., Quad Day, Involvement Fair
Student Org Development
- Assist with facilitating required educational orientations and workshops for student organizations.
- Work with student organization officers through consultative relationships to assist student leaders in developing budgets and planning the successful execution of events and programs.
Student Engagement Administration
- Serve on the advising team for Illinois Student Government.
- Perform other duties as assigned (including service on campus committees) to advance the unit, department, and division.
Minimum/Required Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree.
Experience:
-
A total of five (5) years in education, training and/or work experience in advising college/university student governments or college/university governing councils.
- (Note: Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.)
- Demonstrated experience in college student organization/government/council advisement.
- Experience in facilitating processes and working with a diverse student body, faculty, staff, and the public is essential.
- Experience in developing, presenting, and promoting workshops, classes, or training.
Preferred Qualifications
Education:
- Master’s degree in Higher Education, College Student Development, Student Affairs, or a related field.
Experience:
- Familiarity with college/university student government procedures.
- Good knowledge of student election activities.
- Prior experience in budgeting and expense management.
- Experience in serving as a liaison between departments and working across units.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of college/university student development theory.
- Effective interpersonal skills and abilities to build positive relationships across the campus.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 12/1/2023. The salary range for this position is $58,000 - $63,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
