Essential Job Functions: Teaching Functions Teach surgical technology program courses which include components of the surgical technology fundamentals and practice. Teach sterile processing certificate program courses. Perform professional duties in accordance with the established policies and procedures of the college. Collaborate within the department and within the college; and commitment to improvement strategies for the college, program, and profession. Provide classroom instruction in accordance with the stated philosophy, objectives, and established outlines of the college. Inform students of course regulations, evaluation procedures, and other information pertinent to the course; prepare course syllabus for each course and distribute it early in the term; routinely update course materials. Maintain regular office hours to ensure availability for student consultation; provide assistance to students in a timely manner. Maintain open lab hours for students to practice skills in preparation for practical exams. Provides verbal and written feedback in an objective fashion and gives students measurable actions to improve skills. Possess knowledge of the curriculum and the program’s evaluation of student learning and performance. Provide and implement quality instruction in the laboratory in an organized manner. Completes continuing education and/or courses in surgical technology, teaching methodologies, and distance education annually. Participate in student recruitment and retention efforts. Answer student questions. Operate audio-visual equipment. Manage the surgical technology lab in compliance with college safety policies. Follow and enforce program and college policies and procedures. Evaluate and grade students during practical exams. Enter grades into Online Learning Management System (Cobra) and input course materials. Enter attendance data to the Online Learning Management System (Cobra). Enter midterm and final grades according to college procedures. Maintain compliance with FERPA, Title IX, Accessibility Services requirements, confidentiality standards, and all applicable college and program policies and procedures. Clinical Coordinator Functions Instruct, supervise, and evaluate students in the clinical setting by visiting and/or being on-site at the clinical facility as required by the clinical affiliate. Provide verbal and written feedback in an objective fashion and gives students measurable actions to improve skills in the clinical setting. Coordinate student placement at approved clinical sites including creating semester clinical rotation schedules, developing and monitoring semester clinical schedules, and grading clinical paperwork and assignments. Ensure orientation to the program’s requirements of the personnel who supervise or instruct students at clinical sites. Create lab and clinical experiences in the electronic document and case log system (Platinum Planner) and monitor and approve student progress. Communicate with clinical preceptors and reviews student evaluations to determine student strengths and weaknesses. Conduct frequent student conferences to review clinical evaluations and clinical progress leading to clinical competence. Coordinate clinical education experiences including scheduling, contacting education departments for hospital orientation requirements, monitor student clearing process for background check, drug screens, health records, and facility clinical education requirements. Act as a liaison between all clinical facilities and the program director coordinating communication with clinical sites to ensure patient and student safety. Establish a clinical organization and management system containing policies and procedures consistent with the school’s and system’s overall policies and procedures. Communicate student progress to the program director. Provide a clinical handbook to clinical affiliates which includes student work policy, attendance policy, assessment criteria, and program clinical policies. Cooperate with the program director in periodic review and revision of clinical course material. Provide academic oversight, including curriculum planning and development of student clinical experiences. Provide continuous quality review and improvement of student clinical experiences. Prepare and maintains all required documentation and administrative reports. Develop clinical syllabi and enforce program and college policies and procedures. Maintain a current and complete health record in accordance with program and regulatory requirements. Participate in Advisory Committee meetings. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements: Must be credentialed to satisfy all appropriate accrediting bodies and the college. In addition: Must hold a current Certified Surgical Technologist credential through a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA). Associate degree from an accredited surgical technology program. Three (3) years’ full-time work experience as a surgical technologist in the scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both within the past five years. Bachelor’s degree in a field related to the position required. Verbal and mathematical abilities sufficient to organize the efficient use of the laboratory, operation of computers and software, and effective communication. Ability to learn the program’s computer resources, and new programs and equipment as technology changes. Must meet the Surgical Technology program’s Essential Qualifications . These may be found on the Surgical Technology website . Current Surgical Technology Certification from NBSTSA. Maintain all professional credentials required to teach in the area of discipline. Prospective new hires will successfully complete a post offer, pre-employment criminal background check. The background check review includes, but is not limited to, exclusionary offenses per the Illinois School Code and Title IV of the Higher Education Act, and nationwide healthcare fraud and abuse scan. In an effort to comply with SURS return-to-work restrictions for employers (40 ILCS 5/15-139.5), candidates for employment at Parkland College must either not be a SURS annuitant or must be willing to suspend his/her SURS annuity upon employment. This applies to all SURS annuitants except those receiving their annuity under either the Self-Managed Plan (SMP) or by lump sum payment.
