iSchool LIS Practicum: Parkland College Prospectus Archives Practicum: Spring 2024
Overview:
The Parkland College Archives has received a large donation of materials from the William M. Staerkel Planetarium including correspondence, slides, reels, photos, A/V materials and more. A practicum student will work with the College Archivist to arrange and describe this collection of mixed materials, create a finding aid, and input metadata into ArchivesSpace, Parkland’s collection management system. This will be a great opportunity to gain processing and preservation experience with a wide range of materials.
Potential Activities Include:
- Arranging and describing a multimedia collection following current archival best practices.
- Creating a finding aid.
- Entering the metadata from the finding aid into ArchivesSpace.
Required:
- The practicum must be completed to receive course credit.
- A commitment of at least 7 hours per week for the semester.
- Ability to work independently.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Preferred:
- Archival course work or experience processing archival collections.
Schedule:
- Hours can be scheduled any time Monday – Friday 8:30 am – 5 pm while the College Archivist is present.
